This has been an unusual month also, but for different reasons. For us it's been with cancellations of services...not due to bad weather...but bad economy. It is really putting a financial drain and strain on the churches and many of them are struggling financially as the old saying goes, "Just to keep the lights on and the doors open." Many churches have had to cut staff, special guests (which is us) and special outreach events. It truly is sad for the churches and...unfortunate for us too, as we were in the canceled category.

Sunny greetings from sunny Florida to all our friends! If you are experiencing the blowing wind, blinding snow, ice or blizzards our hearts go out to you and I wish I could send you a little of this 82 degree temperature to warm you up a bit. This unusual weather pattern has been no respecter of persons or of states; I think it was last week that Hawaii was the only state that didn't have freezing temps. Our office staff back in South Dakota informed us it was nearly 50 below windchill on Tuesday night. In fact our office staff has been snowed in their homes for the past couple days unable to even get into the office, so they are working from home or any computer they are able to get to. Seriously, our hearts go out to all of you who are experiencing all of this.

Many churches have had to cut staff, special guests (which is us) and special outreach events. It truly is sad for the churches and...unfortunate for us too, as we were in the canceled category. But, we have taken our lemons and have made sweet lemonade using our time to pray and read, regroup and meet with hurting friends, partners, discouraged pastors and former missionaries. It has truly been a special time of ministering one on one, or "two to two" (Larry and I), giving hope and encouragement to those that are going through difficult times. Larry and I have been reading through Psalms and Proverbs again and day by day His word tells us in Psalms that He is our strength, our tower to run to in a time of trouble, He is our place of refuge, our friend, our song, our light, and He guides our footsteps to keep our hearts strong as we trust in Him. In other words, He is our all in all - and He is all we need! The world is in turmoil and with all the events in the middle East, we know that Revelation is winding up. We all know that the only answer to inner peace is to know Jesus Christ and to hold on.

Among the many we visits within the last couple weeks, was a delightful drive over to Tampa to visit our dear friends Carl and Betty Malz, ages 88 and 83. Many years ago we ministered with Carl and Betty when they and we were employed by Lowell Lundstrom Ministries and shared in crusades, family life seminars, etc. Both of them are truly giants of the faith. Betty, an accomplished writer, speaker and author of several books including, "My Glimpse of Eternity", and Carl, a great preacher, mentor, Bible scholar, former missionary, have had a great impact on our lives and have been a great example of "flourishing in older years...rather than fading". They've impacted thousands of lives all over the world.

Another quick visit led us to see and chat with our friend, Duane Pankratz, who is originally from Keystone, SD and is in Florida right now.  We also met Scott, who gave us the wonderful treat of fresh lettuce and onions out of the garden.  It will be a long time before we can get that in South Dakota, so we were very thankful!

We also had the joy and opportunity to see my cousins Frank and Fran Burleson from California. Their family lived only 12 miles from us in Browns Valley Minnesota when we were kids. We spent a lot of time together as families growing up. Frank's mother and father would always call and invite us to go to church. They were a catalyst in getting us to church and getting us plugged in. My cousin Frank was a pilot in the military for many years, then retired and he and his sweet wife Fran went to China for 5 years as teachers with the main mission to witness and lead people to Christ. And that...they did.

With the ongoing turmoil in the world and the minute by minute impacting events happening in the middle East we need to pray harder than we ever have as these events will in fact effect America and the whole world. Pray for Israel, God's chosen people, for protection. Pray for our leaders that they will turn to God for wisdom, rather than trusting their own judgment or politics. I love the scripture 2 Chronicles 7:14, "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." We can pray and pray and pray sometimes and we're tempted to get discouraged and we are tempted to say "well we prayed and nothing changed", but what is supposed to happen is that our lives change because of getting into prayer and spending more time in the throne room of God.

Ole and Lena were at the kitchen table for the usual morning cup of coffee and listening to a weather report coming from the radio.

"There will be 3 to 5 inches of snow today and a snow emergency has been declared. All vehicles should be parked on the odd-numbered side of the streets today to facilitate snowplows," the radio voice declared.

"Oh, gosh, OK," said Ole, getting up, bundling up and heading outside to dutifully put his car on the odd-numbered side of the street.

Two days later, Ole and Lena were at morning coffee when the radio voice said:

"There will be 2 to 4 inches of snow today and a snow emergency has been declared. You must park your vehicles on the even-numbered side of the streets."

Ole got up from his coffee as before. He bundled up, shuffled off, and put his car on the even-numbered side of the street.

A few days later, the couple was at the table when the radio voice declared:

"There will be 6 to 8 inches of snow today and a snow emergency has been declared. You must park your cars on the ..." Just then, the power went out.

"Park it where?" Ole asked in the dark, "What should I do?"

"Aw, to heck with them, Ole," Lena said, "Don't worry about it today. Just leave the car in the garage."

RECIPE

Curry Chicken with Croissant

2 ½ c. cooked chicken, cut up                         2 T. sour cream

½ c. chopped walnuts, optional                       ½ tsp. curry powder

1/3 c. chopped celery                                    ½ tsp. Cajun seasoning

2 T. grated onion                                           ½ c. mayonnnaise

sliced seedless red grapes, optional

Mix all together and serve with Ritz crackers or on croissants.


 
 

HOUSEHOLD HINT

A lot of recipes call for 1 or 2 tablespoons of tomato paste. To ensure you can use the whole can, measure out tablespoons of the leftovers on wax paper and freeze them, then take the frozen tablespoons and wrap them in plastic wrap. Keep them in a zipper top plastic bag and put back in the freezer for future use. Simply thaw, or microwave selected portions when needed.

Greetings from Florida! It's a beautiful sunshine day...now reaching 77 degrees...needless to say, a welcome change from the blizzards, blowing snow and negative 20 degree temperatures we've encountered in South Dakota for the past 6 weeks. Larry used the snow blower to get the driveway cleaned out so we could get out of town. We drove into Minneapolis last Thursday night just ahead of another impending blizzard. We spent the day with our daughter, LaDawn and the grandkids before boarding a flight on Saturday afternoon. After a beautiful flight we landed about 6:50 pm at the Orlando airport, disembarked the plane and made our way to the terminal. As I looked out the window, the runway lights shed a light on the palm trees that surrounded the terminal. Needless to say, it was great to see palm trees rather than blowing snow. My eyes met Larry's...he smiled, I smiled back and he said, "Yes, I like this - I was tired of shoveling through 3-5 foot snowbanks nearly everyday." The day we left there were 12-14 foot snowbanks on the South side of our home. Ooooh, the thought that there is still a lot of winter to come. Yes, our thoughts are with all of you who have several weeks left of that to battle.

We spent Saturday night at my cousin's home, Gary and Janet, in Winter Haven. After a few minutes of visiting, they served us a special dessert - fresh navel oranges off of their orange trees.Like starving children, we attacked the juice oranges...mmmm, what a Florida welcome!

We'll be in Florida for the month of February. I can hardly believe that half of January is almost gone. Larry told me the old saying, "Life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer you get to the end the faster it goes." I'm beginning to believe that's true.

Yesterday Larry and I were buried in office work in the motorhome. Our windows were facing the West when we observed the skies were turning dark. About a quarter mile away we saw what appeared to be a white "wall" moving towards us.We sat in astonishment as we watched this wall make its way to us. In less than two minutes it reached us and - POW - it was a deluge of driving rain and wind. It pounded, branches flew and we even felt the wind lift under our motorhome and shake us. I wondered what was next...was it a tornado? But in just a few short minutes, it moved over and was gone. It all came and went so fast, but the experience reminded me of life. One day it can be so calm and then - BAM - a wall of problems, disappointments, and discouragement will throw us an unwanted and unexpected blast. Satan can hit us like that wall of merciless wind and rain.The Scripture says in Isaiah 59:19, "...When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him." In Isaiah 41:10 God reassures us, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Isn't that great - when the wall of discouragement hits, when the pain is unbearable, and our hearts are broken, He's promised that He'll never leave us nor forsake us? The Bible says He will lift us up - note, He doesn't promise that we won't fall or get scuffed and scarred up a bit, but He will lift us up so we can breathe and regroup and He will give us the strength to make it through. Yes, I think we've all been there many times, but the fact that we are still going, that you are there reading this, tells me that God has been faithful, is faithful and will remain faithful.

If you feel like that "wall" is coming against you today, look up, call out to Him. He says He hears our prayers and we can be victorious. Have a great week!

RECIPE

 

Bit O'Brickle Cookies

1 c. brown sugar ½ tsp. salt

1 c. white sugar 2 tsp. cream of tartar

1 c. butter 1 bag Bit O'Brickle or english toffee bits

3 ½ c. flour 1 tsp. vanilla

2 tsp. soda

 

Cream butter and sugars together; then add eggs and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients together and add to creamed mixture. Mix well. Stir in Bit O'Brickle. Chill. Roll into small walnut-size balls. Place on greased cookie sheet. Flatten with a glass or fork dipped in sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Makes 5 dozen cookies.


 
 

HOUSEHOLD HINT


 

- Tin coffee cans make excellent freezer containers for cookies.

- Instead of folding nuts into brownie batter, sprinkle on top of batter before baking. This keeps nuts crunchy instead of soggy.

Our daughter LaShawn and husband Liam drove in from Nashville, Tennessee to spend a week with us. It was delightful to say the least. They were so relaxing to have around. We were able to sit face-to-face, visit and have a great time together. LaDawn, Dante and Myanna came on Wednesday night before Christmas. They always bring action and joy when they bounce into the house. The kids were anxious to open gifts and eat everything and anything that wasn't nailed down. We missed our son Donovan as he couldn't make it home from Nashville, but we were grateful that we saw him in early November when we came through Tennessee.

When the family left...the house felt so empty. Due to our schedule we hurried and took down the Christmas decorations and packed them away, but we didn't pack away the wonderful memories. They are close to our hearts.
 
Of course, we still have my mother, Julie Brooks who is 95 years old and we had a couple gatherings with her at her Assisted Living center. Due to blizzards and storms we had to dance around the weather and make last minute decisions for our family gatherings. One day after Christmas it just happened that some of my brothers came into Sisseton at the same time and we were able to get together for only about 20 minutes, but it was worth it. Larry and I dropped everything, ran up there and took a photo of Mom with six of her 9 sons, her only daughter (which would be me) and her only son-in-law, which is Larry. It was a quick, but memorable moment.

The New Year...we've just been thrust into 2011...ready or not! I was still pushing and shoving, trying to finish and accomplish my resolutions and goals of last year - then the ball dropped at Times Square -and poof here we are!

I must admit I'm a bit relieved to be released of my last year's musts, but also a bit anxious thinking of starting over with all the must be done this year.

Years ago, when Larry and I were involved in the Lundstrom Ministries and Lundstrom Television Ministries with Larry's brother Lowell and wife Connie, and brother Leon and his wife Ronda, life was hectic. We were heavily involved in the weekly, primetime TV specials; traveling and singing 300 days a year; speaking engagements, radio, and school appearances, and crusades all while raising three children on the road - that's just to start the list! At one point I found myself strung-out physically and emotionally. I clearly remember the moment. We were in Manitoba, Canada for a crusade. Being so overwhelmed, I felt I needed a break from everything. I sauntered down the street to a little Chinese restaurant and begged that they would stuff me in a quiet corner where I could hide from everything and everybody. That they did! There was even a little red curtain that they draped half way around my table. Then...the dark, gloomy corner got to me.
 
I broke down and wept, "God, I can't do it anymore. I'm tired. I'm stressed out. I have no more strength to keep up with this schedule. What do I do, what can I do? God, I'm desperate! Please, please help me." In the stillness of the moment, totally broken down and broken before God...He gently spoke to my heart Pslam 46:10, "Be still and know that I am God." The words be still reverberated in my spirit. I felt God prompting me: "BE STILL and know I am God." Through tears I confessed, "Oh, God, how can I be still in this busy life? I don't even know what still is anymore." I could feel the deep pangs of pain in my heart. Oh how I longed for quietness in my life and quietness with God. I knew that to survive, God was right, I had to pull away from the hustle and bustle of the ever-demanding lifestyle and make time to sit still, read my Bible, and feel His peace. It was that moment I began a new, long journey and I began to pull together and find new peace and joy that had been leaking out of my life.

Why am I sharing this with you...because truthfully I feel I'm once again at the same spot. I'm tired. I'm weary. I'm worn down with my to-do's, things and projects...and again God is urging me to pull away from the distractions that are easily besetting me. He's prompting me to pull close to Him, soak in His Word and find His peace and strength, and guidance for this new challenging year.

Now I've shared my heart. Maybe you are feeling like me. You just long for a fresh touch from God and you know you are going to have to pull away and be still in His presence. I pray as you've entered this New Year that you too will find this scripture an encouragement and a guide for your life - as I must do. May God bless you, may you feel his peace, joy and strength and ever-present presence surrounding you.

Dump Salad

1 can Eagle Brand milk

1 can undrained pineapple

1 can cherry pie filling

1 pkg. coconut

1 pkg. miniature marshmallows

1 large carton Cool Whip

 
 
Mix all ingredients together and top with crushed walnuts.
 
 

HOUSEHOLD HINT

You can acquire some extra traction on icy roads by putting tube sand - cylindrical bags, approximately 7 inches in diameter by 2 feet long, each weighing 70 pounds - over the back fender wells of a truck, or in the trunk of a car as close to the sides as possible.

If you should get stuck, you can open the bags and use the sand to gain some traction.

Amidst the busyness of Christmas, I'm reminded of the following story:

A woman was out Christmas shopping with her two children. After many hours of looking at row after row of toys along with everything else imaginable, and after hours of hearing both of her children asking for everything they spied on those many shelves, she finally made it to the elevator with the kids in tow and her arms loaded with her purchases.



She was feeling what so many of us feel during the Christmas season. She was overwhelmed with the pressures to go to every party and every house warming, to taste all the holiday food and treats, and to get that perfect gift for every single person on her shopping list. She had to make sure she didn't forget anyone on their card list, and the pressure of being sure she responded to everyone who sent her a card was almost more than she could bear.



Finally, the elevator doors opened. It was already a crowded elevator but she pushed her way in, dragging her two kids and all the bags of stuff with her. When the doors closed she couldn't take it anymore and stated, "Whoever started this whole Christmas thing should be found, strung up and shot."



From the back of the elevator everyone heard a quiet, calm voice respond, "Don't worry. We have already crucified Him." For the rest of the trip in the elevator it was so quiet you could've heard a pin drop.


This simple but convicting story challenges me to keep the right perspective, when all of the events, hectic schedules, and pressures mount around me. For so many, Christmas runs out before we even get to Christmas Eve.


This year, let's be very intentional to keep the One who started "this whole Christmas thing" in every thought, deed, purchase and word. If we complete this task, just think how different the whole world would be.

Frigid greetings from South Dakota! How cold is it? So cold that Larry said he saw two hound dogs trying to put jumper cables on a rabbit to get him started! Do you get the point? Okay, it's not exaggerated, at least not much.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

LaDawn and the grandkids - we got a quick visit flying in from Florida!It's kind of funny...we left Orlando, Florida two weeks ago and it was 86 degrees. For over a year we had planned our tour and rallies to go all the way out to Florida with the intent of leaving our motor home where it is warm and toasty. We wanted to leave it somewhere that we didn't have to worry about it until we get back to it in mid-January. So far, this all makes sense, right? Our friend David Kjosa, formally of our hometown of Sisseton, was so kind to let us nestle our motor home on his acreage just outside of Orlando. We had the trauma and experience once, and only once, of not getting our motor home out of South Dakota early enough in the fall - and an early snow blizzard pounded the Midwest and the snow impounded our motor coach in a snow bank in our driveway...frozen pipes - the whole nightmare. We vowed to never let that happen again; "We are moving it sooner to a sure warm climate!"


Well, if you listened to the weather or nightly news the last few nights, Orlando, Florida and the surrounding areas have been hit with record-breaking low temperatures, dropping down to the twenties, jeopardizing their fruit crops of oranges, strawberries, etc. Tonight (Wednesday) is supposed to be another dangerous night of low, freezing temperatures. As you probably already know, they spray the crops with water, which coats them with ice for 2-4 hours to prevent the fruits from freezing. (I...would've never thought of that. Sounds crazy to put ice on something you don't want to freeze -ha!) As only a blonde would say, "Maybe we should've had someone spray our motor home with water" - just kidding.


The good news is (we hope) that the temperatures didn't drop enough for an extended time to freeze the pipes. Anyway - how ironic that it's as cold in Florida as it is in parts of the Midwest. I couldn't help but chuckle watching the night news and watching people on their vacations at Disney World bundled in winter coats, gloves, scarves, etc. How disappointing for them. Could this be called, "global warming" (chuckle)?


All of these occurances: unusual weather patterns, flooding, storms, increase in drugs, senseless killings, etc., all points to the return of Christ. Jesus came over 2,000 years ago as a babe in a manger, walked with us for 33 years ministering and is home now with the Father making preparations for the greatest Christmas celebration ever. It will be the greatest of great reunions with all of our loved ones who have gone on before.


Then...we will gather around the throne - and we will shout Hosanna and praises to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I'm getting anxious!


Think of Christmas with Jesus, without pain, financial difficulties, disappointments, sorrow, wars, etc. Won't that be heaven!


Think of Christmas without empty chairs, tears, broken hearts due to the loss of loved ones who have been ripped from our lives, leaving us feel alone and abandoned. So many of our immediate family, friends and partners have faced and felt the pangs of death this past year.


Let me encourage you, because Jesus was born, because He died, because He rose and lives at the Father's right hand...it all spells out hope. Hope that we will be with him soon, I really believe. That hope gives us joy and strength to make it through each day. If we know Christ, and if our loved ones who have gone on before us knew Christ as their personal Savior, we will all be reunited for a "Family Christmas Reunion" beyond one that could ever be planned or imagined.


It's our prayer that God will comfort you, who are hurting, and those of you who are happy will comfort the lonely and hurting.

In Appreciation

Larry and I have been blessed with God's very best secretaries in our home office in Sisseton, SD. Everyday we thank God for each of them: Marne Snaza - Office Manager, Barb Schiltz - Bookkeeping, and Tricia Schiltz - Schedule Coordinator. They are so dedicated. They (we call them "Larry and Gloria's angels") make it possible for Larry and I to be "on the road" on extended tours. They have it all under control and have the greatest attitudes, love people and love God even more. Thank you, staff, for being our wonderful support team!

My First Christmas in Heaven

 

I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below
With tiny lights, like Heaven's stars, reflecting on the snow.

The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away the tear
For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.


I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear
But the sounds of music can't compare with the Christmas choir up here.


I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring,
For it is beyond description, to hear the angels sing.


I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart.

RECIPE



Pigs in a Blanket Hotdish


1 medium head cabbage                       1 can tomato soup


2 ½ lb. hamburger, browned              1 can mushroom soup


1 cup raw rice                                         2 cans water


In casserole shred one layer (about ½ head of cabbage) in bottom. Sprinkle ½ cup raw rice on cabbage. Add layer of hamburger. Repeat layers. Pout water and soups on top. Bake for 1 ¼ hours at 350 degrees, covered. Stir ½ before done.


 

 





HOUSEHOLD HINT


Here is a use for those single socks we all have around. Fill one with long grain rice or dried beans and tie a knot in the end of the sock or sew it up on end. Microwave for 2 min. whenever you need a heating pad for a sore neck, back, etc.

It has been another action packed two weeks. Larry and I flew into Minneapolis from Orlando, Florida the day after Thanksgiving. The temperature was climbing up to 86 degrees in Orlando that day (wow do I miss that right now!) .

 

 

 

 

My cousins Gary and Janet Stubenrauch from Winter Haven, FL gave us a ride to the airport.  It was great to see them while we were in Florida.  We were able to spend Thanksgiving with them and ate at The Cracker Barrel.  The turkey was not like what Mom used to make - ha!

Once we arrived at the airport, we unloaded the suitcases onto the curb quickly due to high security, and were ready to run to the roar of hundreds of people lined up to go through security. Larry quickly reached for his business roll-on suitcase and the handle fell off (great...ugh). He now had the challenge to carry it by hand through the crowded terminal. We lined up like penguins along with hundreds of other anxious travelers wondering how the pat-down or the body scanner episode was going to go. Tensions were high, crying babies, everyone taking off their shoes, jackets, belts, etc...at this point I was wondering how much we were going to have to take off. Just as we got about 50 people away from the scanner, a TSA official announces in a dead-pan voice, "Cheer up, you only have 2 ½ miles to your gate to board your plane!" Everyone gasped...and then a slow roar of laughter broke out...then hilarious laughter. He had successfully diffused the horrible tension in that part of the terminal.

Feeling more relaxed, we proceeded in the security line...it was now our turn. I had removed my shoes, jacket, vest, necklace, change out of my pocket, belt, and placed the cell phone with everything in the container as I smiled to myself because I knew I had done well...I was ready! I walked through the metal detector and BUZZ...the alarm went off. The TSA agent motioned me to stop and asked what I had that would cause the alarm to go off. "Do you have any metal in your body, like from surgeries?" Somewhat relieved I responded, "Yes, I have rods and screws in my leg and foot, but they are titanium." He squinted, "That wouldn't set off the alarm. Walk through again." BUZZ it shrieked again. "What do you have that would cause this to ring, a watch?" I responded, "No, I don't have a watch, mine broke." Then I looked down on my right wrist where I had my $1 special bracelet...just knowing that that cheap thing could never possibly set off an alarm. Then I just grinned and said, "Could it be this?" I took off the bracelet...and no alarm. What a relief! I laughed and said, "That's those $1 bracelets for ya - I'll have to get a better one next time!" Then it was Larry's turn...I don't even want to go there...he was already almost stripped down to his night-wear. Not much left on but his t-shirt, jeans and socks....and guess what, he zipped right on through the check point. As we were getting all dressed and put together again, I told Larry I was getting worried that if the bracelet didn't do it that the TSA would ask me to take of my wig...and if that would've happened...everyone would have run and the TSA would definitely have trouble trying to believe that the lady in the photo ID was the same as the one without the wig! Thank God I was spared from that.


I have to say that every TSA person in the Orlando airport that we came in contact with was absolutely wonderful and courteous. The media often takes things to extreme I have found out.


Last Sunday, after arriving in Minneapolis with a great deal of snow, sleet and wind we settled in at our daughter LaDawn's and had the opportunity to attend Celebration Church. We saw Lowell and Connie Lundstrom and Pastor Londa Lundstrom.  We were also able to see our nephew, Lance Lundstrom, who had just flown in from Peru.

 After a long year of giving out, it was refreshing to sit and take in. Londa spoke on Hope, which is so fitting for this time of year with so many people hurting, along and feeling rejected. She used my favorite passage of scripture in Lamentations 3:21-25, "Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning;great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him. The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him." When I open my bible, it often opens to this scripture as I've held onto that through the years. I've rejoiced over it and I've wept over it. When everything is going great - I rejoice that His mercies are new every day. When my life is seemingly falling apart, I weep. "God, you said in your word, your compassions fail not...well here I am again, Lord. I need a huge portion of your compassion along with lots of strength, wisdom and knowledge, with protection, provision, and, if it's okay with you, even an unexpected blessing would be wonderful." (I don't ask for much do I...chuckle!) I am so thankful for His word, my life map, to keep me going and in the right direction.

We left on our fall tour mid-September and we hope to get back to Sisseton by December 5th. I have a feeling it's going to be like an Indy 500 to get my house cleaned, put up a tree, decorate, plan meals, wrap gifts, etc. amidst my daily office schedule. I am so excited for the family to come home, even though it's for a few short days. I used to do a lot of my Christmas shopping early, but I can't do that anymore as we fly home and can't bring anything with us. So I have a feeling it's going to be a crash-Christmas-shopping spree! "I can do it, I can do it, I can do it (I'm trying to convince myself, ha!)."

This Saturday is December 4th, Larry and I will hit another milestone. Our grandson Dante turns 18 years old. It seems like just days ago that LaDawn brought him home from the hospital. Last night I commented to Larry, "Wow, I remember when I turned 18, I remember when LaDawn, Dante's mother turned 18, and now her son is turning 18...does that mean we are getting old?" I looked at him with my best don't you dare answer that look. He looked at me and chuckled, "Getting old?" Enough said. We are here in Minneapolis to celebrate his 18th and he has requested to go to a Japanese restaurant with the family so that's what we'll do - sounds like fun!

PS. Oh, I forgot to tell you that on the way to Florida we drove through Savannah, Georgia took a three hour quick trip and visited Riverwalk and ate at Paula Dean's restaurant. Did I say butter? She cooks everything in butter, just like she says. We ordered her fresh Cajun Shrimp, Johnny cakes and special potatoes...it was delicious and harmful to the body!

RECIPE


White Cookies


¾ c. oil                                            1 tsp. salt


1 c. white sugar                              1 tsp. baking soda


1 c. powdered sugar                      1 tsp. cream of tartar


4 c. plus heaping T. flour              1 tsp. vanilla


1 c. margarine                                2 eggs


Cream together, oil, margarine and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix in dry ingredients. Roll into balls and flatten slightly with a glass dipped in sugar. You can use colored sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for 9-10 minutes.

 





HOUSEHOLD HINT


To remove bleach smell from hands (and that slimy feeling) pour a little vinegar or lemon juice over your hands then rinse. (bleach is alkaline, vinegar and lemon are acid, so they cancel each other out and balance the pH of your skin.)

You know you're in the deep South when you see the signs, "Alligator River", "Boiled Peanuts", "Land of Cotton", and "Fresh Seafood". Yes, that definitely gets my attention! The last week I feel like Larry and I have been privileged to journey through history and adventure books as we passed through Maryland, Virginia (noteably Richmond, Virginia), mesmerized by the Shenandoah Valley. There was a tinge of tears as we drove amidst the once blood-soaked battlegrounds of those who shed their blood and gave their lives. Thousands were just kids fighting an adult war for freedom so you and I could enjoy it. Very touching.We arrived in Manteo just in time to see the sunset


 

Then we rolled our way to and through the winding ribbon roads of West Virginia - onto the outer banks of North Carolina. We arrived at our destination for a Sunday service, which was in Manteo, NC, a bitty island snugged up to Nags Head on the Atlantic Ocean. Miles of coastline proudly displayed its pristine beaches. I wish we could've had the time to stay a couple of days to visit the landmarks such as the famous Wright Brother's who made history of the first Kitty Hawk flight in 1903 where they were airborne for a glorious 12 seconds of flight. Then there's Roanoke Island where Sir Walter Raleigh explored and colonists established their settlement in 1585. In fact, the first English born baby was born in the mid 1500s in Manteo where we were. A few miles away is Cape Hatteras, lighthouses, etc, so much to see - no time this time - hopefully next trip!

 

 

The sights were inspiring and exciting, but there's truly nothing more exciting to us than to see and altar call like we had last Sunday morning at the First Assembly of God in Manteo, NC. We were so happy and honored to be back with our former evangelist/revivalist friends, Steve and Becky Smith and their daughter Sarah. They were on the road for years until their daughter Sarah, only 7 or 8 at the time was stricken with cancer and they had to leave the road life. She is now 13 and knows what it is to wear the cap of death, but more than that, the healing of God. She's doing great. Now her mother Becky is on a breast cancer journey. To talk to them you wouldn't know their pain and hurt as they are so vibrant, loving and delightful to be around. We are praying for Becky. (We plan to have part of Becky and Sarah's testimony in our January Newsletter. The service was wonderful and the altar call was precious as always. Becky and Steve emailed us last Monday evening, here it is:

 


"Classy...That's the first word that came to my mind after the first five minutes of Larry and Gloria's service had passed. Not classy in a prideful, uppity sense, but classy in the sense that they were doing what they were born to do and were so very good at it. They were good at being themselves and being comfortable in their own skin, good at hearing the call of God and living out that call with excellence, good at making a congregation of strangers immediately feel like a gathering of friends and good at telling corny jokes (Larry) and good at patient eye-rolling at said jokes (Gloria).



After the morning service, I talked with several of our parishioners and each one of them said basically the same thing, "We just loved Larry and Gloria. They are such special people!" As I thought about their tenderspirits, dedicated lifestyle, and passion for the souls of the unsaved,I couldn't help but agree.


In fact, I figure that if a person was looking for the perfect recipe for a pair of evangelists, those characteristics I saw in Larry and Gloria would provide the main ingredients: sweet spirits, dedicated lives,a passion for souls...with a dash of class thrown in."

What a surprise!

At Harper's Ferry rally in the church walked friends Don & Tamara Long who had driven from Asheboro, NCUs with Don & Tamara Long to be at the service. When I saw them I gasped, "Don't tell me you drove 350 miles just to be here tonight." At which Tamara chuckled, "That's what you get for advertising your schedule in your newsletter." Over lunch the next day Don and Tamara commented, "We've never personally been in one of your services - but as soon as the two of you began to sing and share I felt everyone in the sanctuary relax. We could tell by watching you that you enjoy ministry and love each other. It really came across - and we felt the anointing on the altar call, which was evident when the invitation to come to Christ was presented. I'm glad we came."

A Quick Getaway!

Our daughter, LaShawn and son-in-law Liam bought us a ticket to fly to Nashville where we spent 5 days. It was so wonderful being with our daughter, Liam and our son Donovan. It went too fast, but we enjoyed every minute of it.

 


 

Happy 95th Birthday...

 

To my mother, Julie Brooks, on November 16th! She is and has been my inspiration, role model and definitely the wind beneath my wings. We had a family reunion celebration for her in July and this coming Sunday the 21st, there is a friends and family open house in Sisseton, SD. This Thanksgiving Larry and I have so much to be thankful for: our children, grandchildren, my mother and extended family. We are also so thankful for God's protection on the road for 45 years, and for being able to minister to thousands who have made decisions for Christ. Most of all, we are thankful for the moment that Larry and I invited Jesus Christ into our lives, when we were 12 and 13, and for the honor of being called to serve in full-time evangelism.

This thanksgiving, take the opportunity and privilege to appreciate each to her and tell everyone that you love them. Life is uncertain - the future is uncertain - but God is faithful! Have a wonderful thanksgiving and God bless you!

The Best Day of My Life


 


Today, when I awoke, I suddenly realized that this is the best day of my life, ever!


There were times when I wondered if I would ever make it to today; but I did!  AND because I did, I'm going to celebrate!


 


Today, I'm going to celebrate what an unbelievable life I've had so far:


the accomplishments, the many blessings, and, yes, even the hardships


Because they have served to make me stronger.

Today, none of these miraculous creations will escape my notice.

RECIPE


Sweet Potato Pie

 

2 c. mashed fresh or canned sweet potatoes

4 oz. cream cheese, softened

1 c. sugar

1/4 c. half-and-half

4 Tbsp. butter, melted

2 lg. eggs, lightly beaten

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

1 9-inch Deep Dish Pie Shell

 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  In large bowl, with mixer on medium speed, beat sweet potatoes and cream cheese until smooth.  Add sugar and half-and-half; beat 5 minutes or until sugar dissolves, scraping sides of bowl with rubber spatula.  Add butter, eggs, vanilla and cinnamon, and beat until blended.  Pour mixture into pie shell.  Bake 1 hour or until filling is puffed and set around edge but center jiggles slightly.  Cool completely on wire rack.  Serves 10.

 





HOUSEHOLD HINT


An easy way to share (get rid of) Thanksgiving leftovers is to buy the throw-away aluminum baking pans with lids to send leftovers home with guests. Example: Buy 2 pans for each family; one for the main meal leftovers and one for desserts.

We spent the last week traveling through Southern Pennsylvania. During our travels, we passed by Somerset, PA, which caused a solemness as we remembered September 11th and the bravery and sacrifice of the passengers of Flight 93. As I refIected on the events of that day, I couldn't help but wonder what the passengers on Flight 93 were thinking the last few seconds on that fatal flight. For those who knew Jesus Christ as their Savior, I am sure the cold chills of impending death must have been frightening, yet they knew that although they were "going down" ----they were "going up"! How tragic for those that did not know Christ-the hopelessness and indescribable terror and fear of the unknown must have been suffocating as the plane dove into the ground. I took a few moments to quietly pray for the families who lost loved ones in that tragic event.

 

 

Sharing the road...

From Somerset, PA, we took the winding ribbon backroads that meandered amongst the Amish farms and buggies. You should have seen the looks of inquisitiveness as our big motorhome shared the pathways of the old one lane bridges and narrow roads with the Amish buggies. We finally arrived at Oak Dale Mennonite Church and nestled our motorhome behind it which was about 20 feet from a pasture filled with horses and an Amish farm.

It was a joy to be back with Pastor Joe and Naomi Byler. They truly are a sweet, pure-hearted couple. Larry ministered on Saturday night, "Come...let us reason together," with college and high school students. He loved the challenge. Nine made decisions for Christ and of those, two were first time decisions.

 

 

Sunday morning, God again touched hearts through the music and ministry. We had another precious altar call. Pastor Joe told us, "This time and the last time you were here are the largest altar calls I have seen. I have been here for 19 years." The church was thrilled with the response to the altar call.

Then, as usual, in rural America, the Oak Dale Mennonite congregation put on a feast of everything imaginable there is to eat for Sunday noon. May I say that every bite was delicious!

 

 

 

 

 

 

OOPS!

 

 

By the way...I have to share the Sunday chuckle with you. Larry was preaching and using three pumpkins to illustrate his sermon. Just at the climax of his sermon, at a very serious moment, he picked up a pumpkin-and PLOP the pumpkin fell leaving Larry standing there holding the stem. Of course, the congregation gasped---looked at the shocked look on Larry's face-and then proceeded to break out in explosive laughter.

Now on with the rest of the story...Monday night we were invited over to Hilda Maust's home (she is a dear partner and friend of the ministry). Our Mennonite friend, Kathryn Miller, brought over a delicious meal. When it came time for dessert, Kathryn piped up and giggled as she presented a beautiful pumpkin pie, "Larry, here is a pumpkin pie made from the pumpkin you dropped"! We all enjoyed another round of laughter. I quickly instructed Larry, "You dropped a pumpkin and reaped a pie. But, don't get any ideas that your mistake will work twice."

 

(Kathryn Miller, along with her mother and sisters, babysat our daughter, LaDawn, during our crusade in Grantsville, MD, in 1971 when she was just 11 days old. How sweet to reconnect with her and her sister. )

 

 



Hilda Maust...what a sweetheart! We met her and her husband, Ivan, over 30 years ago. They pastored a Mennonite church in the Salisbury area. They have both been very dear friends of ours. Ivan passed away a couple of years ago. After my session on Tuesday night where I spoke to the women only on the subject, "Coping...when you can't," Hilda took me aside afterwards. SGloria with precious friend, Hilda Mausthe proceeded to share with me, "Oh how I needed this and enjoyed it. I wouldn't have missed this for anything. After Ivan passed away, I was experiencing some real tough lonely days. One day in particular I was so hurting and I picked up your book, For This Moment, which tells about your tears, trials and triumphs. It just encouraged me so much! Thank you!" I love these older saints who pour forth into my life. What gems!

 

 

 

Well, this update is rolling along, but I better halt it in order to help Larry pack so we can get going to our next destination.

RECIPE


Two Cheese Bread

 

3/4 cup water, warm

 

2 tbsp butter, softened

 

2 tbsp sugar

 

1 1/2 tsp salt

 

½ cup shredded Swiss cheese

 

½ cup small curd cottage cheese

 

3 cups flour

 

2 1/4 tsp. active dry yeast

 

Place all ingredients in a bread machine according to manufacturers directions.  Select basic bread setting.

 





HOUSEHOLD HINT


Do you dislike foggy windshields?  Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glovebox of your car.  When the windows fog, rub with the eraser!  It works better than a cloth.

Greetings from the beautiful state of Pennsylvania! With that in mind, Larry is urgently working along with a couple of partner friends getting some maintenance done on the motor home. Since the last "On the Road" report we've covered a mile or two - Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and on into Pennsylvania.


 

Rev. Dennis & Joyce HaarerOn October 10th, we were back in Hillsdale, MI with our pastor friends Dennis and Joyce Haarer. We've been with them several times through the years. Their sweet loving spirits along with their sweet congregation always make us feel like we're coming home. When Pastor Dennis introduced us he said, "If I were to describe Larry and Gloria's ministry...I would say it is an 'altar call on wheels' with singing, preaching and a few of Larry's crazy jokes." I thought, "Wow! We've never been described like that before." Then the pastor added, "People always come to Christ in their services...and I know it will happen again this morning."

 

 

 

Yes - God honored his faith, and because of all the prayers of the sowers...we come in to reap (evangelists) and harvest (altar call) the souls that are seeking a relationship with Christ. Isn't that great? Together...pastors, prayers, and presentation - brings precious people to Christ.

From Hillsdale, MI we journeyed on to Clarion, PA where we nestled our motor home on the Walt Clutter farm down in the holler next to a beautiful pond. The Clutter family has been so gracious to allow us to be family with them on the farm. It has been the perfect place where Larry could have time to do maintenance on the motor home. Beings we weren't traveling every day - I could keep my office out and have a great few days of non-interrupted time with which I could catch up on mail and office work. About 4 o'clock last Walt and BuddyThursday afternoon, Walt Clutter, our host, pounded on the motor home door and commanded, "Get out of that office - it's the last nice, warm day of the season - we're taking you and Larry on a ride through the back hills, up on the mountain on a mule!" I thought, "Dear God... the last thing I want to do is ride a mule." Then Walt grinned, "That's my four-wheeler - common let's go!" They threw a bale of hay on the back where Joan and I rode. Larry, the dog Buddy and Walt climbed in the front.

 

For the next two hours...it was like a bit of heaven just to get out and ride in the open air in 70 degree temps, up the mountain, through the corn fields, enjoying God's beautiful fall foliage, through the pastures and back to the farm. This Clutter family has such pure hearts. Love it!

 

 

 

 

Our special 45th anniversary celebration

 

 

Friday evening, their daughter Kathy and husband Bill invited us over for supper. They surprised us with an anniversary cake, a beautiful floral arrangement and a delicious home-cooked meal. Wow...that was special! We usually spend our anniversary traveling to a destination somewhere. It was a great 45th memory maker.

Another treat for us was meeting up with evangelist friends Paul & Esther Murray while we were coming through Indiana.  They have been active in ministry for many, many years and are a blessing!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Last Sunday, Oct 17th we ministered with Pastor Ron at Alpha A/G in Clarion, PA. We had a precious service and altar call where many responded and came forward to encourage others who were hurting or coming to Christ. There were 3 first time decisions and several re-affirmations.

God created the mule, and told him, "You will be a Mule, working constantly from dusk to dawn, carrying heavy loads on your back. You will eat grass and you will lack intelligence. You will live for 50 years."

The mule answered, "To live like this for 50 years is too much. Please, give me no more than 30." And it was so.

And it was so. And so God made Man to live 20 years as a man, then marry and live 20 years like a mule working and carrying heavy loads on his back. Then, he is to have children and live 15 years as a dog, guarding his house and eating the leftovers after they empty the pantry. Then, in his old age, to live the 10 years as a monkey, acting like a fool to amuse his grandchildren.

RECIPE


 


Hamburger & Cabbage Casserole


2 lbs. hamburger, browned with onion (to taste)


1 large or 2 small cabbages, steamed (chopped up)


2 cups cooked rice


¼ to 1/3 cup brown sugar


3 tsp. salt


½ cup water


Mix browned hamburger with steamed cabbage, rice, sugar and salt. Put into greased shallow pan and sprinkle water over it. Bake for 1 ½ hours at 300 degrees, or microwave 20 minutes.




 





HOUSEHOLD HINT


 



Recycle those old nut shells, including pistachios, walnuts, peanuts and other nuts. Once you're done eating the delicious nuts, break them up and use to line plant pots or use as mulch for your garden.

It's a beautiful fall day...there's a nip in the air which has spurred on the trees to turn the leaves bright and burning colors. As I write this in our motor home in Indiana, I can see a little black squirrel hustling back and forth carrying what appears to be a walnut in its mouth. The way it's racing around there's no doubt it has a mission in mind...it knows another season is coming quickly, and it's preparing for it. Larry and I feel the same way when it comes to our ministry. The "signs" of Christ's coming are all around us and we are doing all that we can do to reach as many as we can with a simple salvation message. The bible says in John 9:4, "As long as it is day, we must do the work of Him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work." Just as the nip in the air serves as a reminder of what's to come, there's a realization that our time to reach the lost is running shorter.

Over the last couple weeks, the rallies have been precious. We started out the fall tour in Eagle Bend, MN. What a way to begin a two month tour with the altar filled with those hungry for God. Among them was a family with several grown children who made first time decisions for Christ. It was a pleasure to meet interim pastor David and Twylah Squire. What a neat couple. (I think even a few people enjoyed Larry's corny humor). The really exciting part of the rally came at the conclusion of the service. Larry preached a simple gospel message on God's offer of salvation through Jesus Christ. Frankly, I was anticipating a maximum response of six or eight people, with half being children. Imagine my surprise and absolute delight when four people made first time decisions for Christ and between 12 and 16 people responded to the invitation to rededicate their lives to Jesus. From Eagle Bend we headed off to Waupaca, WI by way of Minneapolis where we were able to spend an evening with our daughter, LaDawn and grandkids, Dante and Myanna. It's always hard to leave on tour and leave family.

Last Sunday we were thrilled to be back in Waupaca, WI ministering with our friends Pastor Bob and Linda Bohn. We've known them since...well...not the beginning of time...but it seems like it - HA! We've known them since we were young, and they were younger! They have pastored that Assembly of God church in Waupaca for 19 years. They are so loved and give love so freely...I can see why they've been there that long. It truly is a family church. Thanks Pastor Bob and Linda for your faithfulness and making us feel so welcome while we were there!

Tuesday morning, we left Waupaca and drove to Milwaukee and were able to stop and see my brother, pastor Jerry Brooks and his family as they were celebrating their son's birthday. Next, we had the challenge of driving through Chicago late at night, and today we are stopped for a bit in Indiana.

This should make a pumpkin pie big enough for Larry! 


 





RECIPE


Chocolate Pecan Pie


3 eggs, slightly beaten


1 cup corn syrup


1 (4 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet baking chocolate, melted and cooled


1/3 cup sugar


2 Tbsp. butter, melted


1 tsp. vanilla


1 ½ cups pecan halves


1 - 9" unbaked pastry shell


Heat oven to 350. In large bowl, stir eggs, corn syrup, chocolate, sugar, butter and vanilla until well blended. Stir in pecans. Pour into pastry shell. Bake 50-60 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack. Be careful not to overbake!

When making fresh apple pies, substitute ice-cold cider for the water in the pie crust.
