Wow! What an action-packed week. It seems like I'm still flying...

March 8, 2006

Wow! What an action-packed week.  It seems like I'm still flying, as my feet haven't been still since the plane landed in Phoenix (one week ago today).

As we were flying over the state of Arizona, the land looked so parched from the lack of rain.  They haven't had a drop of rain since last November.  Much prayer has been going up for the end of the drought.  According to the letters from our friends and partners, many states desperately need rain.  Please remember to pray for these folks!

After landing, we were anxious to get back to our coach, which has been parked in Apache Junction by a church.  Our son Donovan drove it there after Larry's TIA stroke in late November 2005.  At the time, Larry was in the hospital in Nebraska.  It was so good to unlock the coach door and step into our "home on the road!"  We were thankful to find everything okay, except…we had a lot of extra relatives that had moved in to occupy it.  Ants!  They were crawling everywhere, and I was beating them to death with an old rag.  Exhausted, we went to bed.  A few moments later, I started itching here and there.  I jumped up, turned on the lights, and saw that ants were crawling everywhere on my bed-between the sheets, and in my nightgown!  What a rude awakening.  Needless to say, it was a sleepless night.  We spent Thursday scrubbing, vacuuming, and laundering all the bedding and other linens.  We put ant traps everywhere!  The ants must have liked whatever was in the traps, because they quickly disappeared after that.  Thank God!

On Saturday morning, we loaded up our sound equipment and headed off for Sierra Vista by way of Tucson.  It was a beautiful 200 mile drive.  Dozens of saguaro cacti treated us to the typical sights of Arizona. We arrived in Sierra Vista at 5 pm, and quickly set up our equipment, hoping to have a quiet evening in the motel, so we'd be rested and prepared for Sunday's service.  That plan didn't quite work out!  We had a fluke with our sound system, and it squealed out of control.  Something was definitely wrong, and I was definitely stressed!  Larry and I worked for over five hours, and we finally got it up and running at 10:15 pm.  We still had some quirks to deal with, but I was relieved to know that we at least had sound.

Pastor Ken FrankOn Sunday morning, we had two services at the Sierra Vista Assembly of God church, with new pastor Ken Frank.  We have been coming to this church for about 10 years now, and it was thrilling to see people in attendance that have come to Christ under our ministry.  It is especially wonderful to see how they have matured in the Lord!

When we were at this same church three years ago, the former pastor's daughter, Jim & LaRae SwartzLaRae LePoidevin, was single and involved in the church.  She had been praying for God to provide her with her life's mate.  That Sunday morning, Jim Swartz came to the service, and when Larry gave the invitation, Jim rededicated his life to Christ.  A couple of weeks later, Jim and LaRae began to date; then they became engaged a few months later.  They got married last summer!  They are both so happy, and are both involved in the church.  It is exciting to see how God works in the lives of those who love Him!

The altar calls were precious, to say the least.  As you can see by the photo, God was drawing people to Him by His Spirit.  Those joyful and tearful reunions at the altar always reaffirm our calling to us.  When I saw the altars packed with people making commitments to Christ, I then knew why we had such an attack on our sound equipment the day before.

Arizona, of course, is "snow-bird country."  People flock from all the colder states, and rush to where the sun shines brightly and it's warm outside!  During the second service this past Sunday, I asked the congregation what states and countries were represented there.  They hollered out, "California! Canada! Minnesota! Wisconsin! Panama! Arkansas! Iowa!"  And on and on it went.  I then heard someone holler, Audrey Blanco, Gloria, Alice Moldrem Wheeler. Alice is from Bisbee, AZ, and Audrey is from Tucson, AZ."Sisseton, South Dakota!"  I saw a person in the back with their hands raised, and I asked, "THE Sisseton, South Dakota?"  They laughed, "Yes!" I found out that it was Alice Moldrem Wheeler.  She spoke up, "I was your Sunday School teacher when you were little!"  My heart leapt.  I readily recognized her-she looked as beautiful and gracious as ever, only a little older.  I acknowledged her, and thanked her for her part in building my spiritual life as a child.  I was so glad that I could honor her that way.  Just then, her daughter Audrey piped up, "Gloria, I was with my parents at your wedding.  I can still remember it-it was so beautiful."  Larry and I chuckled, "Wow, that was forty years ago!  You have a good memory!"  I remember Alice being so sweet and so full of Jesus.  And she still is!  Alice made a tremendous impact on my life growing up, and evidently made a great spiritual impact on her daughter Audrey's life, as she is the coordinator for the "Women of Virtue" conferences that are held all over the United States.  Those conferences touch many thousands of women each year!

Touching others and building lives; isn't that what life is all about? Larry & Ruth LePoidevin (friends and former pastor of Sierra Vista Assembly of God). It was great to see them! Matthew 15:16 says, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven."  In other words, let your daily Christian walk, talk, and actions be so evident to those around you that they will see Jesus just spill out all over.  Then they will desire to have what you have spiritually, and ultimately find Christ, or continue to grow in Him.

The reason I am in ministry today is because I had positive role models in my life, like Alice Moldrem, who poured forth Jesus.  That gave me a deeper desire to know more about Him, and to live a Godly life.  Remember, we leave an impact upon every person we meet-whether good, bad, or Godly.  It has been my prayer, and continues to be, that whomever I come into contact with will see and feel Jesus in my life, and that they will desire Him.

Well, I must run once again.  I pray that you will have a wonderful week, and that you will be blessed by God's love, comfort, and strength.

Gloria

March 1, 2006

This is a big day!  We are both on our way to the airport and will arrive in Phoenix, Arizona later today.  We are leaving the beautiful tropical Hawaiian Islands, and will be ministering the next five weeks in the lovely desert state of Arizona.

Yesterday, February 28, was a real milestone for me.  It has now been one year since Larry fell off the top of the coach, onto me, and broke my leg!  Though it's been a long year of rehabilitation, I am so happy that I still have my right foot!  Those first few hours after the accident, the doctors in Slidell, Louisiana Thank God I have come a long way!were not sure if I'd be able to keep that foot.  I know it was a miracle, an absolute gift from God, that my foot was able to be fully reattached.  Not one day goes by that I am not thankful to see that foot on the end of my right leg!  The scars are my souvenir of God's goodness to me.  Now my leg is my "weather forecaster."  Whenever the temperature changes, the plate and screws in my foot go crazy!  I still experience a lot of pain, due to the type of injury I sustained.  But that's okay!

Speaking of a long recovery-last night, I watched a special Hurricane Katrina update broadcast.  I saw a news piece on Slidell, Louisiana, which is where I was hospitalized last year following my accident.  The hospital I stayed in had been leveled during Katrina, along with so many other buildings.  I often think of my doctors and nurses there, and I wonder where they are now.  They were such extra-special, wonderful people!

After that news program, I called to check on the church in Kiln, Mississippi, where Larry and I ministered at the time of my ladder accident.  Pastor and Mrs. Ken Worley suffered extensive damage to their church building as well some damage to their home.  The church has been trying, since right after the hurricane, to get materials to begin reconstruction.  On February 24, the day I called the Worleys, the first load of building materials had just arrived that very morning.  They have been waiting almost six months for those materials!  Let's continue to pray for these areas still devastated by the hurricane season of 2005.Pastor Sniffen shared,

Larry ministered his last Hawaii message in a home missions church called Kamala Valley Assembly of God, which is pastored by Herb Sniffen.  They have such a wonderful group of new parishioners!  After Larry preached and gave the invitation, over 40 people made decisions for Christ.  Even more wonderfully, 2 of those were first-time decisions!  We are always in awe of, and humbled by, being a part of God's work.  We feel we are privileged to be able to do it!  That is why we keep going-people are hungry for Christ.

Debra Pagan shared theDebbie Pagan with her husband and grandson following about our ministry:  "It would be difficult to share in one paragraph or less 'my take on the ministry' because my heart is overwhelmed with the love that portrays from Gloria and Larry Lundstrom.  This is a couple who have been through so much pain and heavy trials in their past/present but nothing, absolutely nothing can turn them away from the Love of Christ.  Thank you for your desire to share Christ with us.  You have been absolutely what we need because if you can endure all these trials in life, we can surely endure also."

Last night, Larry had an interesting experience.  He had gone over to a Barnes & Noble bookstore to do some research.  He began to visit with a young woman about issues like home and family.  The woman asked him all kinds of questions, and then thanked him for being so kind and for sharing with her.  She then informed him she was a Hindu.  Boy, did Larry race to that one!  He began to witness to her.  After he shared the gospel, she thanked him again and left the store.

A young Korean gal then walked up to Larry and said, "Excuse me.  I couldn't help but overhear your conversation with that Hindu woman.  I am a Christian and I attend a Christian church in Korea.  That was a wonderful conversation you had!  I just wanted to thank you for witnessing to her like you did."  God is always faithful to open doors to share the gospel, isn't He?  The question is: do we take the opportunity when it is presented?

Well, it's time once again to go.  I will tell you goodbye, or Mahalo, from Hawaii.  We will reconnect next week from Arizona!  God bless you, and have a great week.

Gloria

This is the last time I can say "Aloha" to you! I can hardly believe we've been in Hawaii for six weeks now.

February 22, 2006

This is the last time I can say "Aloha" to you!  I can This precious family has followed our ministry for the past 15 years...it was great to seem them again!hardly believe we've been in Hawaii for six weeks now.  It's time to pack up for our departure on March first.  We'll be headed to Phoenix, Arizona.  It has been such a wonderful time of ministry over here!We have made so many new friends, and we are reluctant to say goodbye to those we've known for years.  Many people in the Hawaiian Islands are hungry for ministry, and their hearts are open to receive Christ.  We always appreciate that!

Last Sunday, Larry ministered a simple gospel message at Bethel Chapel in Waipahu, Larry giving the altar call at Bethel Chapel in Waipahu, HI.during two morning services.  Again, the Holy Spirit was faithful to draw dozens to Christ.  When Larry asked how many people had responded for the first time, many hands were raised.  It's always thrilling to see new "babies" born into God's Kingdom, and it's equally thrilling to witness prodigals returning to Christ.  The images of the altar calls will forever be with us.
Larry with his support crew...these guys helped him set up for the rally. Thanks a bunch!

Speaking of packing, isn't that always a challenge?  It can be like a trivia game to try to pack all that you need for six weeks-including two computers, office and study materials, mail, Bibles, plus all of our clothing-into four suitcases and two small carry-ons.  If a piece of luggage exceeds 50 pounds, you have to pay an extra $25 to This photo was taken out our hotel window....breathtaking!$50 per overweight piece.  When we came over to Hawaii, two of our suitcases weighed 49 pounds, and the other two weighed 48 pounds.  As you can easily deduce, there is no room for us to do any extra shopping!  Someone asked me recently if I've bought souvenirs and clothes while I've been here, and I told them, "Yes-twelve postcards and four key chains, which I sent back to family and friends."  Unfortunately, a wheel got knocked off my luggage by the handlers, so it no longer rolls-instead you have to drag it.  Oh well, if all we had to worry about was a missing suitcase wheel, wouldn't life be a piece of cake?  Ha!  That last statement reminds me of a true story I read yesterday:

"A woman was sitting in her den one day when a small black snake suddenly appeared, slithered across the floor, and made its way under the couch.  Being deathly afraid of snakes, the woman promptly ran to the bathroom to get her husband, who was taking a shower.  He came running from the shower with only a towel wrapped around his waist, grabbed an old broom handle from the closet, and began poking under the couch.

At this point, the sleepy family dog awoke.  Curious to see what was happening, he came up behind the husband and touched his cold nose to the back of the man's heel.  The man, surmising that the snake had out-maneuvered him and had bitten him on the heel, fainted dead away.  The wife concluded that her husband had overexerted himself and collapsed with a heart attack.  She ran from the house to the hospital, just one block away.  The ambulance driver promptly returned with her to the house and placed the man on a stretcher.  As they were carrying him out of the house, the snake reappeared from beneath the couch.  One of the drivers became so excited that he dropped his end of the stretcher and broke the husband's leg.  Seeing her husband's twisted leg, the wife collapsed.  Meanwhile, the snake slithered quietly away!

And so how was your day?  Ha!

I hope you needed that humor for today, as I needed it yesterday! The scripture to correspond with that story is II Timothy 4:5 (NIV): "But you, keep your head in all situations..."

I pray that your week will go more smoothly than that story.  I pray that again, God will supply your every need, strengthen you, and refresh you through His Word and the time you spend in prayer.

Next week, we will connect with you from the beautiful state of Arizona.  God bless you!  Have a great week-

Gloria

Greetings! It seems the days fly by so quickly, and before I realize it, another week of my life is history.

February 15, 2006

Greetings!  It seems the days fly by so quickly, and before I realize it, another week of my life is history.

I called our daughter LaDawn back in Minnesota, and she chuckled, "Here I sit in 7 degree weather with snow, and you sit in 82 degree sunshine with palm trees."  I told her, "Well, if I have a choice, this is better than that.  Ha!"  A couple of days ago on the TV, the weatherman gave a weather alert and was predicting an arctic front that was to move through.  Well, the front came through, and the temperature got "down" to 62 degrees!  Hmmm, I think we need to take that weatherman back to the Midwest to show him what a real arctic front is!  It is supposed to get below zero again in Minnesota this weekend.

Last Saturday morning, Larry and I went to Anna Miller's restaurant for breakfast.  We hadn't been there for two years.  It is a favorite spot by Pearl Harbor where tourists Larry with our waitress, Espie...she remembered Larry because of his jokes!and locals like to eat.  They serve fresh seafood omelets and delicious pancakes with their "to-die-for" coconut pancake syrup.  Anyway, we were sitting in our booth, and the waitress came to our table and asked to take our order.  She took a second look at us and giggled, "I remember you!  You haven't been here for a long, long time."  We responded, "Yes, it's been two years."  She hesitated, looked up as if to the ceiling, and then said, "You're Larry and Gloria.  Larry, you came in here two years ago and told us all those jokes."  We all laughed-what are the chances ofThe flowers over here are truly breathtaking! remembering someone after thousands of other customers have passed through the doors since?  It must be Larry's memorable jokes-ha!

Tuesday was Valentine's Day, and Larry gave me a beautiful bouquet of roses in a red vase.  That touched my heart!  We have been blessed to have shared 40 Valentine's Days-and each one keeps getting better.  The grandkids sent beautiful cards and sent Grandpa a bag of his favorite licorice.  He'd rather have candy than flowers anytime!

Last Sunday, we ministered at Pastor Janet Cordeiro's church in Waimanalo.  When Pastor Janet Cordeiro of Waimanalo Assembl of God with her grandniece.Larry gave the altar call, again the response to the invitation was wonderful.  There were 10 first-time Larry is encouraging those who made first-time commitments at the altar.decisions for Christ.  Many prodigals also came back home!  Precious family reunions took place at the altar.  That's what life is all about, isn't it?  It keeps us going, after all these years, to see lives changed like that.  It is also refreshing to visit with so many friends that we've gotten to know through the years here in Hawaii.  They have all become like family to us.  Already, they are asking when we will be coming back!  Our tentative plan is to return in 2008.  It seems like a long time away, but we know it will come quickly.

Perhaps you've had the opportunity to watch a few moments here and there of the Winter Olympics taking place in Turin, Italy.  I am amazed at the talent, endurance, and perseverance of all the athletes!  I enjoy the interviews and photos of them telling and showing how hard they've worked just to qualify for their country's An unusual sight...a palm tree with a snow-covered mountain in the background. This photo was taken on the Big Island of Hawaii.Olympic team.  Then the adrenaline hits when they compete in the final races.  The exuberant look on their faces is priceless when the final scores come up, and they are told they are the winner of a gold medal!  Even though they are exhausted physically and mentally at that point, they realize it was worth all the effort when the Olympic medal is placed around their neck.  They know it made the grueling months and years of exercise, practice, injuries, and strict diet, worth it all.  They had the stamina necessary to pull themselves up again, and to go on.  As they stand before the whole world, they will always be remembered in the history books for having endured and won the race.

The Olympic coverage challenges me to never give up, even though this life is often filled with many obstacles and much pain and disappointment.  If we faint not, as it says in Isaiah 41, we shall win the crown of life.  Wow-that makes the Olympic medal look pretty unimportant in the scheme of things.

If you, too, have become weary in running this life's race, don't give up.  Keep reading the Word.  Keep your faith.  Keep praying!  God will give you the endurance to make it until you get home to heaven.  And when you stand before the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, He will say, "Welcome home.  You've won the race.  Here is your crown of life!"  What a moment to look forward to!  I just encouraged myself with that, and I hope I've been able to encourage you also.

I pray that this coming week, you will feel the presence of God and His strength to carry you through whatever you may be facing.  Remember, it will be worth it all when we see Jesus.

Gloria

As I look out the window, the trade winds are softly blowing the palm branches. It's a beautiful morning here in Hawaii!

February 8, 2006

As I look out the window, the trade winds are softly blowing the palm branches.  It's a beautiful morning here in Hawaii!

It has been another action-packed week.  Last week, our precious Filipino friends, Leonor and Evelyn, who have graciously housed us, announced, "We bought tickets to the big island. We leave tomorrow morning."  At first, I panicked, knowing Leonor and Evelyn took me to where I could taste sugar cane right in the field.my plate was full of office projects and mail to answer-but the decision had been made, and the tickets purchased and paid for.  The next morning, we were up at 4:30 and off to the Honolulu airport at 5:30 to catch an inter-island flight to Hilo on the big island.  We arrived there at about 8:30.  Evelyn and Leonor had a rental car waiting, and off we went!  We drove the ocean highway from Hilo to where we were to stay (about three hours away).  The drive was breathtaking!  We saw the ocean, rainforest, and desert, all in the same trip.  The desert looked so much like Arizona that I had to remind myself that this was actually Hawaii!

We had some precious moments with this dear family! On Thursday, we were invited to a home for a Filipino meal and fellowship.  When I say the word "meal," I would be wise to clarify that it was actually more like a "buffet."  Oh my-Filipinos cook as if they are hosting a large church fellowship dinner.  It was delicious!  As we sat with this precious family of three generations, we were praying for the perfect opening to share Christ.  They then began to ask about our "jobs."  And so the open door was there!  As we shared in very simple terms our calling as evangelists, one humble, precious man in his 70's looked over at Larry with desperation in his voice and tears in his eyes.  He asked, "How can I know if I will go to heaven?"  Wow-the door was wide open then!

We went on to share the simple Gospel story and the plan of salvation.  Larry tenderly asked if the family would like to pray the sinner's prayer so that they could know that there sins were forgiven and that when they died, they would go to heaven. Without hesitation, they all nodded their heads "yes."  The ten of us joined hands and then prayed the prayer of repentance together.  I cannot explain to you the joy and peace that filled that little dining room after we prayed!  It was then that I knew for sure the real reason we made the trip to the big island.  It was the burden of our friends to bring us to that particular home and share Christ.  That's what life is all about!  We flew back to Honolulu the next morning.

On Saturday we drove to Ewa Beach (about 40 minutes from Honolulu) to set up a Rev. Bob & Kathy Stalcup of Ewa Beach, HIfew things in the Assembly of God church for the service on Sunday.  It was great being back with Pastor Bob and Kathy Stalcup.  Kathy was instrumental in giving us our initial introduction to the Hawaiian Islands.  In 1990, she invited me to speak at the Hawaiian Islands Women's Conference at Kona on the big island.  Since then, we have returned every two years for a Hawaiian ministry tour.  Pastor Bob and Kathy's church has become like "home away from home" to us.  It is such a loving church family!

This service at Ewa Beach was to be Larry's first official service to preach since he had his TIA stroke about nine weeks ago.  The previous week, I could sense Larry We were amazed at the awesome response to the altar call!was a bit concerned about getting into the pulpit after what he experienced on the platform in Nebraska the last time he'd preached.  I encouraged him that all he needed was the anointing, and that all would go well.  When Pastor Bob introduced us and called us forward, we felt such love from the people.  Immediately, we both felt peace and a sense of excitement about being back together in ministry again.  The Spirit of the Lord is so precious!  When Larry gave the invitation, people flooded the altar to make decisions for Christ.  It was so awesome to see what God did.  As We love these precious people!I've always said, if Larry and I are faithful to do what God has called us to do, and to keep our hearts pure and tender and our motives right, God will do the rest.  And oh, how true that is!

We anticipate another good service this weekend on the other side of the island.  We appreciate your continued prayer for us and tThis gentemen was giving us the "hang loose" sign...common in Hawaii. It means, "Take it easy and slow down!"he services we hold.

Larry is feeling well.  He is taking his medications faithfully, and is enjoying long walks per the doctor's orders.  Hawaii is a great place to walk, with the beautiful weather and scenery!

Well, again I say "Mahalo," which is Hawaiian for thank you, for taking the time to catch up with us again.  May God bless you, be ever with you, and give you a wonderful week.

Gloria

Thought for the Week

Heavenly Father, help us to remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry, and spend a few precious moments with her children.

Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can't make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.

Remind us, Lord, that the scary-looking bum, begging for money in the same spot each day (and who really ought to just get a job!) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.

Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.

Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all of the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love.  It is not enough to share that love with only those we hold dear.  Open our hearts not just to those who are close to us, but to all of humanity.  Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive.  Help us show unfailing patience, empathy, and love.  Amen.

Household Tip

To easily remove burnt-on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover the bottom of the pan, and bring it to a boil on top of the stove.  The skillet will be much easier to clean now!

Aloha from Hawaii! It's a beautiful day; of course, it is always beautiful in Hawaii...

February 1, 2006

Gloria with our precious Hawaiian friend, EvelynAloha from Hawaii!  It's a beautiful day; of course, it is always beautiful in Hawaii. The temperature firmly stays between 70 and 80 degrees. Our ministry friends are so graciously housing us in a room on the 13th floor of a hotel/condo. We can see the ocean (it's only about three blocks away) out our window. Sitting here at the table working on ministry mail, I can see sailboats and cruise ships, as well as people surfing and parasailing. It sure makes work a lot more pleasant with scenery like that!

About 10 years ago, our family was ministering in Hawaii and we were given three tickets to go parasailing. We were taken out on a boat to the ocean, strapped into body halters, ejected with our parachutes and zoom! Up and away we went, hundreds of feet above the water. I sailed through the air, up and up until I could hear no earthly noise. The boat and my family in it looked like little toys, they were so far away.I remember thinking, "This is what heaven must be like…so peaceful and serene." I completely savored each moment I was up there. Then it was time to bring me down. The boat operator began to reel me and my parachute in…down, down, down. Then to meet the wishes of my family, he danced my feet over the ocean waves and hollered, "Shark, shark!" I am sure my screams were heard miles away! Of course, Larry put him up to doing that. It sounds like him, doesn't it?! My family was laughing hysterically.  I am glad someone thought it was funny. Thank God for humor in life! That's what keeps a person from going crazy, as I am sure you agree.

We thank God for the opportunity to return to Oahu for ministry. These people are so Joe and Nattie Lived...sweet friends and a buffet of wonderful food!precious and are open to the Gospel. Much of our ministry during the week is done one on one in peoples' homes. It's great getting to know them, learn the Hawaiian culture and eat the delicious food. Saturday night, we were invited over to Joe and Nattie Lived's home, who are some Filipino friends of ours. You should have seen the buffet of food they served us! For many years while he was in the service, Joe was a chef aboard a submarine. This man can cook anything and make it delicious! The menu was baked fish, sesame chicken, grilled steak, sautéed jumbo shrimp, lasagna, fried rice, loaded baked potatoes, salad, broccoli casserole, island vegetable soup, grilled garlic bread, and oh yes, to top it off we had key lime pie, custard pie, cookies and coffee. Larry thought he was at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb! They cook lots and lots of food and the Filipino tradition is that when you leave, you take plates of food with you. Larry loves that!We took three big plates back to our room. Yummy!

Sunday morning, we didn't have a scheduled service so Larry and I caught a city bus that took us about a mile toward Waikiki Beach. We then walked three or four blocks to the South Shore Hope Chapel. It was a small group, but they were so loving and fun. As the pastor introduced the visitors, we stood up and said we were the Lundstroms from South Dakota. We heard a whoop and a holler! It turned out there were two couples from Litchfield and Detroit lakes, Minnesota, who had attended several of our services in the past. The couple next to us lit up, leaned over and whispered, "We remember you from being at a Bible Camp in Canada in 1969." Wow!Talk about a time warp! It's a small world, isn't it?

The pastor at the South Shore Hope Chapel used to attend a church in Minneapolis, where we ministered years ago.

Well, I must go!We will talk to you again next week. Please continue to pray for Larry and me that as we minister lives will be changed for all of eternity.

Hi!  Greetings to my website family.  I missed you!  We just arrived today in Oahu, Hawaii, after a two-and-a-half week much-needed trip to Australia.  Our children gave us the vacation for our 40th wedding anniversary.

What an exciting trip!  It took us 21 hours to get to Australia.  We were greeted there by beautiful, warm (90+ degrees!) sunshine.  It was quite different than what we left behind in South Dakota!  Australia's population is over 20 million.  We spent the first five The city of Sydney...a skyline viewdays in Sydney, which is Australia's largest city.  It is well-endowed with museums, galleries, and much rich history.  Our first stop was at Sydney's number one tourist attraction: The Sydney Opera House.  It proudly sits on the tip of SydneySydney Opera House Harbor for all to see.  It took 14 years to build, and is every opera singer's dream performance venue.  We were privileged to take in many of Sydney's tourist attractions by train, bus, ferry, and tram.  We got a quick education on the layout of the city of Sydney!

One day, we Missionary, Craig Tasker, from Estonia (which in near Czechoslovakia)stopped for lunch at a McDonald's.  You simply wouldn't believe how expensive food is over there!  A cup of coffee is between $3.50 One of the way to get around Sydney...busand $7.00, and there are no refills.  But, McDonald's does give seniors a small cup of coffee free if they order a senior ice cream cone for 50 cents.  Larry certainly couldn't pass up that good deal!  As we were having coffee there, a young man was sitting at the sidewalk table, working on his computer.  Larry struck up a conversation with him, and found out the man was a missionary with the Assemblies of God in Estonia.  We had a good visit, and he invited us to minister in his area sometime.

We did a lot of walking, and I thank God that I was able to make it.  I wasn't without pain, but I did make it!  Each evening, my injured foot was swollen, but by morning, I had encouraged my foot, "Come on, gimp!  You can make it-let's go!"

 National Maritime Museum in Sydney

We found the people in Australia to be very classy, warm, and friendly.  They dress up like they are going out on the town!  When we first got to Sydney, we wanted to run to the beach, but found out that a young girl in her late teens had recently been mauled to death by a shark there.  I quickly changed my plans and decided to stay onshore, just in case a shark was still hungry for a Norwegian lunch.  Ha!

From Sydney, we flew to Melbourne.  It was sweltering hot, and they are experiencing a severe drought with a restriction on water use.  MDowntown Melbourneelbourne could be defined as a city of the arts.  The buildings' architecture is so rich with incredible history-much like New York City.  Melbourne prides itself on its sports, and the Commonwealth Games were taking place while we were there.  People from all over the world poured in to the area.  It was a good thing our rooms were booked a year in advance, or we would have been tenting under a bridge somewhere!

In the United States, football is one of our major sports.  But American football is referred to as "footy" by folks in Australia.  The big sport down under is cricket.  It is somewhat like baseball, and Larry found the game very intriguing.  I think he asked every one he met on the train to explain it to him-ha!  We also visited what is called "The Docks," where the world's finest, most exclusive The breathtaking St. Patricks Cathedral in Melbournesailing vessels were holding their major race.  What breathtaking vessels we saw!  We visited Melbourne's Parliamentary Precinct, St. Patrick's Cathedral (which is amazing!), the Historic Town Hall district, and Chinatown.  Those are just a few of the attractions we took in!  We also had the opportunity to visit the much-renowned Windsor Hotel, which has wined and dined royals from the world over.  With Larry's friendly persuasion, the hotel clerk gave us a quick peek into the grand ballroom, where so many greats have dined and danced.  Might I add that in our casual clothing, Larry and I were a bit underdressed for such an elegant setting!

 Larry enjoying a treat,

Back to the food in Australia: it is all very delicious and upscale!  We ate many delicious dishes, and never asked what it was we were eating, if you know what I mean.  Ha!

From Melbourne, we flew to the GoLarry and Gloria by the beach on the Gold Coastld Coast, known for its hundreds of miles of sand beaches.  We managed to get to the ocean twice.  The water was so beautifully blue!  I learned the hard way, even with lots of sunscreen, about the strong sun rays in Australia.  I got a bad sunburn-oh well, I guess it's my souvenir!  Australian souvenir: Gloria's sunburn!

We rented a car and drove all over the Gold Coast.  My only disappointment of the trip was that I never did see a kangaroo or koala bear!  After looking and looking, my imagination went wild when I saw something jump out of the bush.  I hollered, "Is it a baby kangaroo?"  Larry then informed me, "No, I think it was a big jackrabbit."

Well, thanks for letting me share my whirlwind capsule of our trip with you.  We are now back in Hawaii, and at this moment, I am trying to stay awake at 10 pm, because our body clocks are so confused.

Gloria at the fruit stand admiring the delicious choicesWe had a truly wonderful trip, but now Larry and I are anxious to get back into ministry again.  We love ministering to our wonderful Hawaiian friends.

Just before we left the Sydney airport last night, we were sitting in a café area there.  I looked up and saw a big sign among all the gates signs, which read, "Prayer Room."  It had an arrow pointing up the escalator.  My heart leapt; I wished I had the time to run up there!  Amidst all of our fun and action (as well as fatigue), I felt I needed a prayer room to retreat to, so I could pull myself back together spiritually.  Some people just seem to go through life and get by, but not me.  I need all of God that I can get to make it through each second of every day.  What a joy and privilege to be able to just sit in His presence and talk with Him.  Biggles Burger: "I ordered a cheeseburger, and this is what I got: Hamburger patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, cheese, bacon, a huge pineapple slice, all topped with a sunny-side-up egg! Wow, was I surprised!"

I pray that God will bless you and keep you this week, and that His face will shine upon you with His awesome love and favor.  I'll talk to you again next week!

Aloha from Hawaii,

Gloria

Getting ready to go!
Greetings from down under!  We left South Dakota last week.  We flew with my mom to Arizona.  She stays there for a few months in the winter so we were glad we could accompany her on the plane.  We arrived safely in Australia and are enjoying ourselves very much.
Our children planned a trip for our 40 year wedding anniversary.  They gave us money to go!  This trip is coming at just the right time-we are both exhausted.  The doctors told Larry and me that we need to back down our schedule and take a break, due to Larry's minor stroke.  Only God knew in advance that we really need this break!  Our two daughters, LaShawn and LaDawn, are accompanying us, so we are enjoying that.

We will start our ministry tour on January 26 in Hawaii.  I can just hear you laugh as you are thinking, "Yeah, you'll just have to suffer for Jesus in Hawaii, won't you?"  Larry and I respond, "Someone has to minister over there…it may as well be us!"  Ha!  After the recent South Dakota weather winter weather we've experienced, it will be so nice to go back to the tropical Hawaiian climate.  God has greatly blessed our ministry in Hawaii.

 Packing for the big trip!

Due to distance and schedule, we pondered how to update this weekly page in our absence.  I truly love keeping connected with all of you, my website family.  You are so great!  Anyway, our office staff and children both encouraged us to take a real vacation, leave all the work behind, and just relax.  They said, "Your friends will understand, and be willing to pick up again when you are back from vacation at the end of January."  So that's probably what we'll do!  Thank you for being so faithful to connect with us each week.  On January 26, we will try to share some photos of our trip to Australia.  If you have missed a week or so, you can return to the Article Archives to see family Christmas photos and read older posts.

God bless you!  Talk to you soon!

Thought for the Week

Here are a few cute little letters to God.  These always make me chuckle!

Dear God,
Thank you for the baby brother but what I asked for was a puppy.  I never asked for anyting before.  You can look it up.
-Joyce

Dear God,
I bet it's very hard for you to love all of everybody in the whole world.  There are only 4 people in our family and I can never do it.
-Nancy

Dear God,
My Grandpa says you were around when he was  a little boy.  How far back do you go?
-Dennis

Dear God,
Maybe Cain and Abel would not kill each other so much if they each had their own rooms.  It works out okay with me and my brother.
-Larry

Dear God,
If you watch in church on Sunday, I will show you my new shoes.
-Barbara

If you accidently over-salt a dish while it is still cooking, drop in a peeled potato.  It absorbs the excess salt for an instant "fix me up"!

Happy New Year! It almost seems like just yesterday that I said that. A few years ago, my mother told me, "Missy, the older you get, the more quickly it will seem that life flies by." I didn't really grasp that until I turned 60. Whew…it seems like I had to put on a seatbelt for the fast lane since then!

Happy New Year!  It almost seems like just yesterday that I said that.  A few Taking care of business while at home...Gloria renews her driver's license.years ago, my mother told me, "Missy, the older you get, the more quickly it will seem that life flies by."  I didn't really grasp that until I turned 60.  Whew…it seems like I had to put on a seatbelt for the fast lane since then!

There is something about embarking on a new year-sometimes I want to give a big sigh of relief that I made it through the previous year!  I thank God for His faithfulness in seeing us through 2005, with all the detours in our health and so on.  God is always so good!  Last night, I was reminiscing over the unexpected events that we faced in the past several months.  I was reminded of the words of a song written years ago that said, "Through it all, I've learned to trust in Jesus.  I've learned to trust His word, and to depend upon Him."  I can truly say that through it all, God has been so wonderful.

We are praying that in 2006, we will set our goals according to God's word and His will.  I realize that if I didn't attain my goals last year, I won't get discouraged, because I have the future to try again, or even start over!

A new year…yes, a new start!  Maybe it's time to try to lose the weight that we gained over Christmas.  I told Larry that we need to "back 'er down."  For some reason, Larry didn't get too excited when I brought that up!  He loves his candy.  He has a sweet tooth like his father did.  I have found that I can't leave candy dishes out, or he will wear out the carpet trekking from dish to dish!  He just grabs the candy without thinking.  But guess what…I'm here to remind him and police him!  Ha!  Today he came up from his office desk to where I was working, and I noticed he was chewing something.  I said, "Hey, what are you eating?"  He gave me that mischievous "I've-been-caught" grin and said, "Maybe nothing!"  I replied, "Let me smell your breath."  I grabbed him as he laughed, and the aroma of chocolate floated out.  I said, "Hey, you were in the candy again!"  After a little talk, with both of us in agreement (well, more me than him!), we decided to give away a bunch of our Christmas goodies and candies.  Before you think I'm mean and controlling, remember this: I know him well enough to know he still has a "stash" hidden somewhere!!

Getting ready to go!

Larry and I are in our last-minute rush of packing for a five-month tour, which will take us through several states.  Like Larry often says, we will be going through the state of confusion, the state of shock, and the state of laughter.  Ha!

On the exciting side, Larry and I will fly January 5 to Australia for a few weeks. Our two daughters, LaShawn and LaDawn, will be accompanying us, so we are looking forward to that.

The following is a poem that my mother gave me some 40 years ago.  She said, "Missy, there will be times when you need to rest for your soul, spirit, and body."  I have kept this poem with me all these years, and I guess this is the time to share it with you!

Thought for the Week

I Needed the Quiet

I needed the quiet so He drew me aside

Into the shadows where we could confide

Away from the bustle where all the day long

I hurried and worried when active and strong

I needed the quiet though at first I rebelled

But gently, so gently, my cross He upheld

And whispered so sweetly of spiritual things

Though weakened in mind, my spirit took wings

To heights never dreamed of when active all day

He loved me so greatly He drew me away

I needed the quiet, no prison my bed

But a beautiful valley of blessings instead

A place to grow richer in Jesus, to hide

I needed the quiet so He drew me aside

Christmas is but a vapor however the aroma of precious memories made will last forever.

This past week was action-packed to say the least!  What a joy it was to have had our three children, LaShawn, LaDawn,  and Donovan along with our grandchildren, Myanna and Dante' home for Christmas.  I love it when the siblings begin telling Larry with his girls, LaDawn and LaShawnstories on each other.  Of course, Mama listens in and pipes up, "Where was I when all this mischief was going on?"  All of the stories, fun and giggles were healing to our bodies, souls, and spirits.

On Christmas Eve, we were privileged to attend our little home church for a special Christmas Eve service.  After the service, 23 of our family went toDante' helping Grandpa chip ice off the driveway...he's a chip off the old block! my mother's house for a potluck dinner.  We also watched her open her gifts and enjoyed every minute.  It has been so special to have Mom for these 90 Myanna helping Grandma make cookies...she's a great helper!years.  We then returned home and opened our gifts.  It was such a delight watching Dante' and Myanna open their presents.  We gave Myanna a doll she had wanted and Dante' a set of Legos that he had wished for.  They were thrilled!  They stayed up until 2 AM playing with their new toys.  Children always add zest and excitement to Christmas…that must be where the phrase, "Christmas is for kids" comes from.

The entire Lundstrom family on Christmas Eve!

Along with the many good times,  Christmas can also bring with it sadness when we see the empty chairs of our loved ones who have passed away.  We thank God for hope beyond the grave!  We have lost many friends and partners this past year.  It alerts and reminds us that life is fragile, and we need to cherish each moment God has given us handling it with care.

Donovan sneaking some turkey on Christmas!Larry and I were conversing this morning after devotions about changes.  One of the changes we will see shortly is a change in our eating habits.  While the kids were home, we cooked, ate, cooked, ate and snacked.  Today, I told Larry, "Everyone is gone…Gloria's kitchen is closed for the season!"  He laughed.  I continued, "We are getting back to eating right which means we are back to morning oatmeal to keep your cholesterol down."  He groaned and I assured him "You will be just fine."

 LaDawn's family-Dante', LaDawn and Myanna

Life is all about change and we must be pliable to move with the changes whether they are physical changes, lifestyle changes or spiritual changes.   If we don't change, we will become sick and spiritually stagnant.  It requires God's guidance to move us through the changes we face in life.  As Larry and I look ahead, we know we don't want to sit and rust but we want to be sharing a relevant message that will touch lives for eternity.  Realistically however, we aren't as young as we used to be, but prayerfully, we aren't as old as we hope to become.  We have to make some lifestyle changes enabling us to take better care of ourselves so we can go the long run in ministry.  Evangelism is our calling and our first love.

Perhaps God is speaking to you about change as well.  Maybe you, too, are seeking God's will.  Proverbs 3:5-6 states, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not on thy own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths."

If, at the end of this year, we will determine to do His will and not our will, we will be blessed and at peace.

Have a wonderful New Year's Eve and may you be blessed as you also seek Him for guidance for the upcoming year!

Thought for the Week

The Day After Christmas

'Twas the day after Christmas, and all through the house,

Every creature was hurting, even the mouse.

The toys were all broken, their batteries dead,

Santa passed out, with some ice on his head.

Wrappings and ribbons just covered the floor,

While upstairs the family continued to snore.

And I in my T-shirt, new Reeboks and jeans,

Went into the kitchen and started to clean.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the sink to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the curtains and threw up the sash.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a little white truck, with an oversized mirror.

The driver was smiling, so lively and grand;

The patch on his jacket said, "U.S. Postman".

With a handful of bills, he grinned like a fox

Then quickly he stuffed them into our mailbox.

Bill after bill after bill they still came.

Whistling and shouting he called them by name:

"Now Dillard's, now Broadway's, now Penney's and Sears

Here's Levitz's and Target's and Mervyn's-all here!

To the tip of your limit, every store, every mall,

Now charge away, charge away, charge away all!"

He sprang to his truck, and he drove down the road,

Driving much faster with just half a load.

Then I heard him exclaim with great holiday cheer,

"Enjoy what you got--you'll be paying all year!"
