What a beautiful drive through the prairie lands and badlands en route to the breathtaking Black Hills of South Dakota!
Destination: Camp Judson, which is nestled next to the historic, small tourist town of Keystone. The retreat center is located just four miles from the world famous Mount Rushmore.
Reason: We got an invitation to speak at the Senior Adult SD A/G Ministries State Retreat. Hmmm...seems like just yesterday...okay, actually 50 years ago...the Lundstroms were invited to the Black Hills area to conduct teen camps and family camps. Back then we would receive invitations for women's meetings, family rallies and now the invitation was for a senior's retreat. I can hardly believe the years have flown by so quickly! Larry's line is "Life is like a roll of toilet paper...the closer you get to the end...the faster it rolls!"
As you ponder that thought, let me backtrack a minute. During our route over the 450 miles from Sisseton (NE corner of SD) to the Black Hills (SW corner of SD), we were blessed to see the beautiful fields full of corn and soybeans. The golden hayfields looked like a playground of giant gold cylinders. Then, as we neared the Missouri River, we were delighted to enjoy miles and miles of sunflower fields. If you have never visited the prairie lands of South Dakota, you must visit our great state. The sights of dancing deer and antelope, roaming buffalo, and thousands of pheasants and wild turkeys entertained us on the trip. I exclaimed, "This was truly a wonderful 'vacation drive' being able to enjoy God's beautiful creation and breathtaking scenery." The only downer of the trip was by the time we had gotten to the world renown Wall Drug, the mercury in the thermometer peaked at 103 degrees. Before arriving there, we read a billboard that said, "Wall Drug...Free Ice Water, Homemade Donuts, Pies and Ice Cream." Needless to say, the sign got Larry's attention and the suburban came to a much-welcome screeching halt. We got a 5 cent cup of coffee and a piece of homemade blackberry pie with some unforgettable homemade ice cream. We then took off again as HAPPY travelers!
When we arrived in Keystone, we were blessed to have our friends, Duane and Laura, provide a hideaway for a few days at the beautiful Rushmore Express Inn for us to study and prepare for the upcoming retreat. Thanks, again, for the haven of rest! You so blessed us!
On Wednesday night, we began the Seniors Retreat. Larry and I chose as our theme, "You're Not Old...You Are Gold!" We encouraged the seniors that they have so much to offer. The younger generation and our families need our prayers, our Godly guidance, encouragement and seasoned advice. They need to hear the stories of our faith and of God's provision through the rough times.
David's prayer in Psalms 71, verse 18, is a great prayer for seniors, "Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come."
Just as gold radiates beauty, we, as grandparents, need to continually show forth God's righteousness to the generations that are following us.
It was a privilege to be invited by Rev. Nels and Angie Easterby to minister at the retreat. They are action-packed, vision-minded and have an overwhelming love and passion for the seniors. Their energy for ministry will never be forgotten. They poured their hearts and strength out to each one that attended. They shared the following regarding the retreat:
"The Lundstrom's had a wonderful message for seniors of 'getting busy' and enjoying the journey!"
"I am encouraged to deepen my prayer life."
"The retreat was refreshing. There was a good balance of down-to-earth teaching, music, and ministry."
"I was personally challenged to make new commitments to the Lord!"
"I loved the music, the ministry, the teaching and the food."
It was great to see Ron and LaVonne Masters from Rapid City, SD.
Thank you for following God, and allowing Him to use you!"
The three days were action-packed. We were blessed just as much, or more, being there with this wonderful group.
Late on September 5th, we headed off again, 450 miles back to our starting point, arriving in Sisseton early Saturday morning. Saturday we tried to catch up on mail, do laundry and re-pack to board the tour bus on Tuesday morning with our friends who are joining us for our Fun and Fellowship tour to the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, KY. We will tell you more about that in the next update!
May you have a wonderful month. Enjoy the change of seasons..it's so special!
In honor of Grandparents' Month....
YES, I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN
"I'm the life of the party-even if it lasts until 8 PM."
"I'm very good at opening childproof caps-with a hammer."
"I'm usually interested in going home before I get to where I am going."
"I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up."
"I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a thing you are saying."
"I'm very good at telling stories-over and over and over and over."
"I'm aware that other people's grandchildren are not nearly as cute as mine."
"I'm so cared for-long-term care, eye care, private care, and dental care."
"I'm not really grouchy-I just don't like traffic, waiting, crowds, lawyers, loud music, unruly kids, Jenny Craig and Toyota commercials, barking dogs, politicians and a few other things I can't seem to remember right now.
"I'm sure everything I can't find is in a safe secure place-somewhere."
"I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just my left leg."
"I'm having trouble remembering simple words like..well, like...like."
"I'm sure they are making adults much younger these days, and when did they let kids become policemen."
"I'm wondering, if you're only as old as you feel, how could I be alive at 150?"
"And, how can my kids be older than I feel sometimes?"
"I'm a walking storeroom of facts...I've just lost the key to the storeroom door."
"I'm beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps."
Easy Fruit Cobbler
Layer the fruit in bottom of 9 X 13 baking dish. Sprinkle with powdered jello. Cover with box of cake mix powder. Drizzle with melted butter and water. Bake about one hour at 350 degrees.
Suggestions:
Mix fruits such as peaches and blue or black berries, rhubarb and strawberries, mixed berries or whatever you like. I use sugar free jello and the flavor depends on the fruits you choose. If using tart fruit such as rhubarb you may want to add a little sugar. I use yellow, white or pink cake mixes. This is a good pot-luck dessert dish to take.
If an electric plug fits too tight and is difficult to pull out, rub its' prongs with a soft lead pencil.
