Greetings from Florida! It's a beautiful sunshine day...now reaching 77 degrees...needless to say, a welcome change from the blizzards, blowing snow and negative 20 degree temperatures we've encountered in South Dakota for the past 6 weeks. Larry used the snow blower to get the driveway cleaned out so we could get out of town. We drove into Minneapolis last Thursday night just ahead of another impending blizzard. We spent the day with our daughter, LaDawn and the grandkids before boarding a flight on Saturday afternoon. After a beautiful flight we landed about 6:50 pm at the Orlando airport, disembarked the plane and made our way to the terminal. As I looked out the window, the runway lights shed a light on the palm trees that surrounded the terminal. Needless to say, it was great to see palm trees rather than blowing snow. My eyes met Larry's...he smiled, I smiled back and he said, "Yes, I like this - I was tired of shoveling through 3-5 foot snowbanks nearly everyday." The day we left there were 12-14 foot snowbanks on the South side of our home. Ooooh, the thought that there is still a lot of winter to come. Yes, our thoughts are with all of you who have several weeks left of that to battle.
We spent Saturday night at my cousin's home, Gary and Janet, in Winter Haven. After a few minutes of visiting, they served us a special dessert - fresh navel oranges off of their orange trees.Like starving children, we attacked the juice oranges...mmmm, what a Florida welcome!
We'll be in Florida for the month of February. I can hardly believe that half of January is almost gone. Larry told me the old saying, "Life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer you get to the end the faster it goes." I'm beginning to believe that's true.
Yesterday Larry and I were buried in office work in the motorhome. Our windows were facing the West when we observed the skies were turning dark. About a quarter mile away we saw what appeared to be a white "wall" moving towards us.We sat in astonishment as we watched this wall make its way to us. In less than two minutes it reached us and - POW - it was a deluge of driving rain and wind. It pounded, branches flew and we even felt the wind lift under our motorhome and shake us. I wondered what was next...was it a tornado? But in just a few short minutes, it moved over and was gone. It all came and went so fast, but the experience reminded me of life. One day it can be so calm and then - BAM - a wall of problems, disappointments, and discouragement will throw us an unwanted and unexpected blast. Satan can hit us like that wall of merciless wind and rain. The Scripture says in Isaiah 59:19, "...When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him." In Isaiah 41:10 God reassures us, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
Isn't that great - when the wall of discouragement hits, when the pain is unbearable, and our hearts are broken, He's promised that He'll never leave us nor forsake us? The Bible says He will lift us up - note, He doesn't promise that we won't fall or get scuffed and scarred up a bit, but He will lift us up so we can breathe and regroup and He will give us the strength to make it through. Yes, I think we've all been there many times, but the fact that we are still going, that you are there reading this, tells me that God has been faithful, is faithful and will remain faithful.
If you feel like that "wall" is coming against you today, look up, call out to Him. He says He hears our prayers and we can be victorious. Have a great week!

Rules from God for 2011
1. Wake Up...Decide to have a good day:
"Today is the day the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad in it" Psalms 118:24
2. Dress Up...The best way to dress up is to put on a smile. A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks:
"The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at outward appearance; but the Lord looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7
3. Shush Up...Say nice things and learn to listen. God gave us two ears and one mouth, so He must have meant for us to do twice as much listening as talking:
"He who guards his lips guards his soul." Proverbs 13:3
4. Stand Up...For what you believe in. Stand for something or you will fall for anything:
"Let us not be weary in doing good; for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good..."Galatians 6:9-10
5. Look Up...To the Lord:
"I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me."
Philippians 4:13
6. Reach Up...For something higher:
"Trust in the Lord
with all your heart, and lean not unto your own understanding. In all
your ways, acknowledge Him, And He will direct your path."
Proverbs 3:5-6
7. Lift Up...Your Prayers:
"Do not worry about anything; instead PRAY ABOUT EVERYTHING."
Philippians 4:6
Bit O'Brickle Cookies
1 c. brown sugar ½ tsp. salt
1 c. white sugar 2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. butter 1 bag Bit O'Brickle or english toffee bits
3 ½ c. flour 1 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. soda
Cream butter and sugars together; then add eggs and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients together and add to creamed mixture. Mix well. Stir in Bit O'Brickle. Chill. Roll into small walnut-size balls. Place on greased cookie sheet. Flatten with a glass or fork dipped in sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Makes 5 dozen cookies.
- Tin coffee cans make excellent freezer containers for cookies.
- Instead of folding nuts into brownie batter, sprinkle on top of batter before baking. This keeps nuts crunchy instead of soggy.
