Greetings from Sisseton!

 

We are busy unloading our motorhome and packing and getting ready to leave for Nashville again. We're in the process of putting our motorhome at an RV consignment location in Minnesota. It's simply getting to be too much work for Larry to load and unload, hook up and un-hook up, etc. 

 

We have had this motorhome for 11 years and have loved every moment in it. It has served us well as we've travelled from coast to coast. It has been our home away from home for about 8-9 months out of every year, and has been our office "on the road." It's hard to believe that we've been living in busses since 1965!

 

Larry said the other day, "Honey, this is getting to be too much after 55 years of working on busses to keep them going." So… "It's time!"

 

The music and sound equipment we have will fit in the back of our Yukon for our events moving forward. It will be interesting to break new ground in Tennessee and the surrounding states, especially when so many are interested in "entertainment" and we are "informers" of the Gospel. Anyway, God is good, and it will all work out!

 

I never have to worry about Larry with ministry, as he shares Christ with someone every day. When I was in the hospital, one of the nurses, Anna, took care of me for 5 days and on about the fourth day, after Larry had joked and talked with her and just had fun, he asked Anna if he could have 5 minutes of uninterrupted time sometime when she has a break. He told her he had something very important to share with her. She closed my hospital room door, jerked the privacy curtain across, looked at Larry and said, "Let's do it now!" He shared the simple message of the gospel to her and after a few minutes he asked her if she'd like to pray the sinner's prayer and invite Jesus in to her hart and she replied, "Oh yes, I really do." As he prayed the tears came down. Out the door she went, and 20 minutes later she came in the room, threw the privacy curtain back and triumphantly proclaimed with a smile, "I'm free! I'm free!  Thank you."

 

A couple of days ago, Larry was talking to a business person on the phone, and it got to be a lengthy call, but he made a connection with this person and 45 minutes after a few jokes and connecting, he asked if he could share something very important that would only take about 5 minutes. She readily agreed and Larry shared the simple gospel and asked if they'd be willing to pray a simple prayer and ask Christ into her life. She said, "Yes, I have been wondering and thinking about spiritual things for days. For you to get me on this phone with all of the people who work with this company, it had to be God to know what I needed today." After she prayed, she just said, "Thank you, thank you, thank you…I really needed that." So, ministry goes on. Praise the Lord!

 

 

We had a great rally in Willmar, Minnesota on September 13. There were so many friends and former partners that came out. It was like a homecoming week!

 

It was thrilling to see what God did and afterwards we met with about 20 of our former employees at a Perkins and shared stories of when we were all on the road together. What a fun time!

 

Thanks Bruce and Polly for bringing us into Willmar A/G Campus Theatre for a wonderful evening of fellowship and ministry.

A week ago Sunday, we held a "Movin' On" rally in our home church in Sisseton, South Dakota. What a great time we had of music, ministry, humor, telling stories and touching lives. We had friends from North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Las Vegas, which made it so very special.

Steak and Potato Casserole

Round steak

Flour

3-4 medium potatoes, diced

Salt and pepper

2 T. fat

1 medium onion, chopped

 

Cut steak into serving pieces, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Dredge in flour; brown in fat. Alternate layers of steak, potatoes and onion in covered casserole. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes.

Greetings from Tennessee!  The Bible says "Rejoice in the Lord, and again I say rejoice!"  We truly have much to rejoice over. Isn't it wonderful that when we go through the trials and valleys of life, that God's Word has comfort, hope and strength for us.  

 

Isaiah 58:9 says, "Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and He will say: HERE AM I."

 

I certainly can testify to that as I look back at the last three weeks.  So many of you have written, emailed, or texted asking about the heart ablation I had on August 14th.  Being the strong Norwegian I am, I thought I would go in for the procedure one day and be out of the hospital the next morning.  I certainly was unprepared for the unknowns that would lie ahead. The surgeon came into my room just before surgery, smiled and assured me, "You are in good hands, and it will go great!"  That tripled my confidence in knowing everything was going to be okay.

 

3 ½-4 hours later, I came out of surgery and within in a little bit noticed that there were signs I was bleeding internally.  They took me to have an ultrasound at which time they found that an artery had been nicked causing a blood leak where they had been working on the vein.  Right away they put a ten pound weight on the incision to halt the bleeding….so we thought. During those two days, I was experiencing unbearable pain and from my hip to my thigh, I was turning black and blue.  I was assured that it would continue to discolor but that everything was okay, and I was released to go home to recuperate.

 

Four days after surgery, my health seemed to continue to deteriorate.  Larry and I were concerned as we were scheduled to fly back to South Dakota, but I couldn't shake that inward check which was alarming me that something wasn't right,  and we shouldn't fly. We decided to cancel our flights.

 

On August 24th, ten days after the surgery, I was now black and blue to five inches below my knee and unable to walk.  Larry took me to ER in Murfreesboro, TN. As soon as they saw my leg, they took me into get an ultrasound and as they viewed the results, panic started to set in.  They revealed to me that at that moment I was at very high risk for a massive stroke or heart attack and to not move an inch because it could happen at any moment.  They felt they were unable to perform surgery on the artery because of the possibility of the artery bursting. This time, they put a 20 pound weight on me to stop the bleeding.  The doctors warned the family that if they tried to do anything beyond that, it would be life threatening. This was the only option. My heart sank as the doctor reiterated, "You realize and understand, we don't have any options.  If we do try to do surgery, there is a great chance of stroke and heart attack." We asked how long I had been bleeding, and they said ten days since the surgery. The nurse laid her hand on my shoulder and said, "You must have an angel on your shoulder to be bleeding that long and not have had a disaster.   You must be living right." Of course, we knew it was God's hand of protection all the way.

 

It was at this point that my family began calling for prayer.  The prayers went up and the answer came down----17 hours later the bleeding stopped.  There was definitely rejoicing in that hospital room! I was released to go home four days later.  Our niece, Londa Lundstrom Ramsey, flew down to be with us and the family during the critical time---what an encouragement she was!

 

The doctor said it will still take a while for all of this to clear up, but we are thankful to be heading in the right direction.  We want to thank you all for your prayers, emails, and texts from coast to coast, as well as, Hawaii, Africa, and Canada. The power of prayer moved heaven and a miracle came!

 

As planned, we are scheduled to be in Sisseton and Willmar for rallies in a little over a week.  We are believing all will be well so we can see you there!

Cinnamon Crunch Apple Cake

1 1/2 cups brown sugar

1/3 cup oil

1 egg

1 cup buttermilk 

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 1/2 cups flour

1 1/2 cups chopped apples 

1/3 cup sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 tablespoon butter

 

Preheat oven to 325.  Mix ingredients in order given (except the last 3 ingredients).  Pour batter into a 9×13 greased pan.  Combine last 3 ingredients to make a topping and sprinkle it evenly over the batter.  Bake for 45 minutes.

Greetings from LaVergne, TN!  The last week has been a whirlwind! 

 

Praise the Lord…..we sold our home in Sisseton, SD, and feel very favored to do so as in our small town there are 23 homes for sale (some of which have been waiting 2-3 years to be sold).  We placed our sign up in June and two weeks later, we had a buyer which meant "I must get about the business of cleaning out everything"!  That word "everything" when you really start that process is overwhelming!  We prayed and asked God to give us favor that it could be sold, and we could be out of it by the end of August.  When He answered that prayer, it meant we needed to ZOOM, ZOOM, ZOOM and get busy. 

 

At the time we got word, we were in Nashville for doctor appointments and zipped home to Sisseton to begin the dreaded process of going through everything we have moved from place to place for 53 years.  I told Larry that he had more stuff than I had, but as we went through the process, I discovered I had just as much stuff as he had!  Oops!  Of course, I felt all of my stuff was more important than his!  HA!  Our daughter, LaDawn, came home for a week and helped, as well as, dear family and friends as well.  After five weeks of 13-14 hours days sifting, sorting and determining what was junk, we met our deadline of being out of the house on August 10^th.  We were so grateful that our son, Donovan, came home the last week and pushed us through to the finish line ultimately loading the moving truck to the brim and driving the truck from South Dakota to Tennessee while we flew to meet him in Tennessee.    Donovan left on the 7^th and we left on the 10^th….the same day the truck got unloaded. 

 

My brothers, Rick and Bill, who helped along with other family were joking, "I'm glad you got it all in the truck because the landfill here is full!"  They got a good laugh out of that!  Our garage in Tennessee is filled with boxes.  We will sort through them as we are able and get rid of more stuff! 

 

We thank God for the safe journey, the ability to meet our deadline having everything out , and  for the sale of the house to a family who have  a lot of children and grandchildren to enjoy it.  We are so grateful for your prayers for us!

 

As I am writing this, I am waiting for a phone call from the Vanderbilt Medical Center to give me my last minute instructions for my heart ablation scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday  the 14^th).  The medication for the A-fib for my heart isn't quite doing what it should so we are taking the next step.  We appreciate your prayers for the procedure and recovery. 

 

On to more joyful things….we had a great weekend of ministry last weekend in Elbow Lake, MN, where we did a morning service of music and ministry for their annual Flekkefest!  It was fun and we were so thrilled to see a couple of people make first time decisions….that never grows old!  It was also a delight to see many of our friends and partners throughout the years join us for the service, as well as, one of our priceless staff members and her husband.

 

 

 

 

 

From Barb:  It was so wonderful to be able to attend the service in Elbow Lake.  I have worked for Larry & Gloria since 2001 which seems like a dream.  I went forward at a Lundstrom Crusade in Rosholt, South Dakota when I was 8 years old and gave my life to Jesus.  I never dreamed I would be working for them some day!  Always so wonderful to hear the great singing and the sharing of the Gospel Message!  God truly is so good!

Bean Salad

2 or 3 (15 oz) cans dark kidney beans, drained

½ to 1 c. onions, diced

¾ to 1 c. sweet pickles, diced

3 to 4 hard-boiled eggs, diced

2 T. cider vinegar

2 to 3 T. sugar

Hello from Tennessee!

Yes, we are still here! With the speed bump of an injured knee, we had to stay here an extra couple of weeks for therapy and my doctor and therapist say it's going to take time and patience and at this time, I don't have the patience to sit around and wait for it to heal – ha! I'm used to being on the run physically, but this has me tied down.

Tentatively we plan on flying out July 3^rd and then heading back to South Dakota on the 5^th. We'll be in the home office and around Sisseton most of July with a lot of office things to get caught up on while I heal.

 

Hard to believe that summer is almost half gone – it seems like it was just Christmas. We celebrated Larry's 75 birthday last week. The years just keep flying by!

 

We pray that you're doing well and have wonderful gatherings with your family over the coming holiday! I love how Larry addresses it in his latest article:

 

Stories of freedom are filling the air. One of the headlines in the national news this last month, and at this writing, is about the pardon given to several men and women by President Trump. The first one was that of Alice Marie Johnson, who was granted clemency by President Trump after a push by reality star, Kim Kardashian. After Kim heard the story of Alice, 63 years old, serving a life sentence for a non-violent drug conviction, she went to Washington, D.C., to the President, and presented Alice's case. She was pardoned and set free. Several others are in line, hoping to be pardoned from prison sentences and then set free. Alice has now vowed to help others be pardoned.

 

This news event reminds me that I, too, was in prison—not physically or due to drugs or offenses, but I was in prison because of inheriting the sin that Adam committed by eating the forbidden fruit. Romans 5: 12 states, "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—." Because of one man's sin, we all sinned. We all became prisoners with an eternal death sentence placed

on us. I needed a pardon. I needed to be forgiven by coming to the Lord in repentance.

 

Jesus went to the Father to plead my case that I might be set free and thus changed my identity from "sinner" to "forgiven"; from an eternal death sentence in hell to never-ending eternity with Christ in heaven. I was pardoned at the age of 12, kneeling at the altar at a little Gospel Tabernacle in Sisseton, South Dakota. I heard the simple Gospel message where the preacher

pleaded, "Repent of your sins, and be saved." I really didn't know what the word "saved" actually meant at that time, but as soon as I prayed to invite Jesus into my life, I immediately felt something change in my spirit. I was instantly filled with joy that words cannot even describe, and that remains to this day. Truly Jesus' words spoken in John 8:36 are truth, "Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed." I am free…and happy indeed!

 

Friend, are you feeling the weight of your prison sentence…the guilt, the shame, the chains of sin keeping you bound? Don't wait one day longer!

You can be pardoned for eternity! The words my pastor spoke to me 63 years ago continue to hold the key to freedom, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38)

 

It will be the best decision you will ever make!

Cherry Coke Salad

1 (1lb.) can Bing cherries

1 (6 oz.) pkg. cherry flavored gelatin

1 (1lb. 4 oz.) can crushed pineapple

2 (6 1/2 oz.) bottles Coca-Cola

 

Drain juice from fruit. Add water to make 2 cups. Heat juice to boiling; add gelatin and stir until dissolved. Cool, then add Coca-Cola and fruit. Pour into 1 1/2 quart mold. Chill until set. Makes 8 servings.

Have you ever had one of those days?  Those days when things just do not go as you planned or expected them!  For me, that day was yesterday.  You see, Larry and I have been in Nashville for a few weeks for some scheduled follow up doctor appointments.  After these appointments, we were all packed and ready to fly back to Sisseton and were excited to minister in Sioux Falls on the 24^th of this month!

 

I had one more appointment scheduled for yesterday for my knee.  I had injured it in Sisseton before we left and had hoped that time would heal it, but it wasn't improving.  I had been to the doctor a few times already for it and as time went on, it got worse instead of better.  I walked (painfully) into the appointment because this stubborn Norwegian wasn't going to use crutches or a wheelchair, and it became extremely clear that we had a real problem.  I felt my heart sink as the doctor shared with me after examining it that I couldn't fly, I couldn't do stairs, in fact….I can't even be on it for a determined time.   I exited there with a heavy spirit and a pair of crutches.

 

As we entered into our home, I saw our packed bags, and felt the weight of this latest health frustration.  We knew that with this news that we were going to have to cancel our upcoming rallies to allow my knee to heal, as well as, to undergo another heart procedure in July.  Honestly, I dreaded making the necessary phone calls, but I didn't want this to be a reality.  I want to be able to honor our commitments, to share the Good News, to continue on in the work He has called me to.  Yet….amidst it all, I know that God isn't taken by surprise, and that I can trust Him wholly every moment.  I think of Romans 8:28, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose."  I know that God will turn this frustration into facilitation for His glory!

 

Larry and I ask that you would continue to keep us in prayer over these next few weeks.  Please pray the knee recovers completely, the heart procedure goes well and we can hit the road again!

 

NOTE:  The rally scheduled for June 24, 2018, at Calvary Assembly of God in Sioux Falls, SD, has been POSTPONED!

What a beautiful spring day!

We love coming back to South Dakota to see the green, green grass of home after a fresh rain. We spent the weekend in Brookings, SD in services at Brookings First Assembly of God church with Pastor Gerry and Cathy Bass. We started out Saturday with a Mother's Day Tea event…how fun was that! We loved having mothers and daughters of all ages attend.

 

Then on Sunday we had a morning service where we honored all the mothers and others and climaxed with a beautiful altar call with many making decisions for Christ and two or three mothers, at least, who made first time commitments. That makes for a great mother's day!

 

It was also a joy to be back with Ernie and Gloria Hutchins that worked for us over 20 years ago in our office for several years and did a great job!

 

 

 

How precious to have had my daughter LaDawn born on my birthday, which is May 17^th, Norwegian Independence Day. My mother always joked and commented, "When Gloria was born, the Norwegians lost their independence and she gained it with her tenacity, determination and zest for life." What an honor to my daughter born on my birthday, she's a jewel.

 

 

The week before we had the privilege of ministering at Christian Life Assembly of God in Watertown, South Dakota with Rev. Cliff Sheldon. It was a blessed time and it always feels like "coming home" when we visit.

 

 

 

I would like to share with you an article that Larry wrote and thought it was so fitting. Just a testimony of his family and his mother…

 

What a change there was in my mother's life when our family came to Christ! My mom was a chain smoker, a worrywart and was ridden with such unbearable fear that would leave her often in a state of total panic and dread. If there was an electrical storm, she was so scared and terrified that she would run down to the old musty cellar in the farmhouse and sit on the water pump proceeding to wail and cry. (Electrical storm sitting on a water pump=probably not the best idea.) Of course, being a kid, I would tease her. Sitting there, she would shake her fist at me, "God's going to punish you!" As I stop to remember that, I realize that was my first introduction to what God was like. My interpretation was that I just knew that God was a big bully in the sky waiting to use a baseball bat on me for punishment.

 

Mom also had an almost paralyzing fear that something would happen to one of us kids. Again, as a kid, I never stopped to rationalize why she was so gripped by this emotion but my little brother, Lavern, passed away from whooping cough at almost one year old. I remember the gut wrenching sobbing that came from my mom when she received the news. Not knowing Christ at the time, she didn't have the comfort that only God could give.

 

Mom, when in her 20s, worked for a lawyer in Minneapolis at the Foshay Tower. My dad worked as a machinist during World War II in Minneapolis. Due to Dad's deteriorating health and troubled nerves as they moved into their 30s, Mom willingly gave up her great administrative job, and they moved to rural South Dakota. It was here they started a whole new uncertain life on the farm. Their life was filled with heartache and hopelessness…THEN CAME JESUS!

 

What a day…April 1957…our whole family came to Christ! When Jesus came into our lives, everything changed! Dad's health and wellbeing began to get better. Alcohol left our home. Mom stopped screaming and was delivered from chain smoking. Mom stopped worrying and became a whole new Mom. The farmers a ½ mile away knew "something" had happened to my mom when she wasn't in the farmyard screaming at the top of her lungs, "Watch out, the tractors are coming!" as she often would to warn us of sure danger. Her life until that point had consisted of such unrelenting fear and unrest. Now, she laughed, smiled, and was at total peace. Our entire home and countenance changed.

 

Shortly thereafter, the Lundstroms began the traveling ministry, and Mom offered up her home and experience as a legal secretary to head up the Lundstrom Ministry. She turned her home into an office with desks and employees, sacrificing her privacy and daily cooked for 10- 20 employees. Mom was the solid rock behind the Lundstrom Ministries. She continued to be the Office Manager until Parkinson's incapacitated her for 16 years.

 

It was devastating to see Mom's body cripple up to a fetal position. It was so painful to watch her lose the ability to talk or communicate, but we knew she was a prayer warrior. She loved her family and the ministry. Even though she lay in bed for 16 years, we never doubted that as she lay there with her hands folded, she was praying day and night for her family and the ministry they were a part of.

 

Mom was indeed like the woman in Proverbs 31. She was a virtuous wife who "awoke while it was yet night and provided food for her household (and ministry)" (vs 15). She also watched "over the ways of her household and did not eat the bread of idleness" (vs 27). As Mother's Day once again approaches, we all miss her greatly. We know, however, that the prayers she prayed continue on and that she is now fully at peace and rest, rejoicing in heaven. Thanks, Mom, for allowing Jesus to change everything!

 

I encourage you, friend, that if you find yourself like my mom entrenched in fear and hopelessness, the same Jesus that changed everything in her life will change yours as well. You just need to invite Him in!

 

 

Amen! I just love that story!

Peanut Butter Crunch Pie

1/3 cup peanut butter

1/3 cup white syrup

2 cups Rice Krispies

 

Mix peanut butter and syrup. Add Rice Krispies. Press into pie pan. Fill pie shell with any flavor ice cream. Can also top with ice cream syrup. Double recipe if you want a 9x13 pan.

Greetings from Arizona!  Needless to say it is a toasty day with 97 degrees here.  On the other hand, we had a "cool" weekend of ministry which is always so refreshing.  We are busy packing our motorhome and will be hooking up the trailer with the car and heading off from Arizona Valley up into Flagstaff and making our 1800 mile trip back to South Dakota.  We are anxious to get to our home state again and we have some exciting rallies coming up in South Dakota and Minnesota!

Greetings from snowy South Dakota! We pray you had a blessed Good Friday and Easter Sunday!

What a shock to leave palm trees and 82° sunshine and soft trade winds of Hawaii to 14°, harsh winds, and fresh 12 inches of snow. Brrrr, I thought it was supposed to be spring… got fooled again!

The last few weeks we had a wonderful month of ministry in Hawaii. We love the people over there that are so open, relax, laid-back, and hungry for God.

It was great being back with Pastor Cris and Aurora Bartolome.  They, along with several pastors on the island, are true faithful pastors.

 

They started the church in Hawaii and have been there 52 years!  How interesting that this is Larry and I's 52 year, on the road in evangelism.

Janet Cordeiro is another faithful pastor who has been ministering there for 40 years.  Her church has been supporting us monthly since 2005.  We thank God for those churches that have invested in our evangelism outreach.

So many wonderful pastors that we have known since 1990 and now to watch so many of these friends we met back then who now have children grandchildren and great grandchildren. Whoops, does that make me feel old… I guess I am!

Larry and I have just enough time to unpack our suitcases and pack again to leave for Minneapolis to speak the Senior's Luncheon for the Assemblies of God of Minnesota. We are looking forward to that! Then on April 11, we fly to Arizona to get our motorhome and start our trip back to the Midwest for rallies this summer.

We appreciate your prayers for safety and continued prayers for health. God is good, we just need to be smarter. Ha! Here's our Schedule for our next few upcoming rallies. Please come and join us, we'd love to see you! God bless you.

RECIPE

 

Cream of Broccoli Soup

Cook 1 (10 ounce) package of frozen, chopped broccoli with 1 cup water for about 5 minutes.

 

Add:

3 T. chopped onion that has been sautéed in 2 T. butter

2 tsp. chicken bouillon

½ c. Velveeta cheese

1 can cream of mushroom soup

1 c. milk

 

Combine all ingredients; heat over low heat, stirring occasionally.

Aloha, from Oahu, Hawaii!

I know what you're thinking…"Oh it's terrible to have to suffer for Jesus in Hawaii!" But isn't it great that Larry and I were willing to go and suffer? HA!

 

It's great to be back with such wonderful pastors and friends again, many of them we've known since the 1990s when I held several women's retreats and meetings in the Hawaiian islands. We've had wonderful services in two churches and two more to go during our time here. These precious island people know how to worship and love their music, even more than that I love their sensitivity to the Holy Spirit and the response to the altar calls to be sure they are ready to go to heaven. There have been some memorable and dear first time decision for Christ where people have prayed so long for loved ones to get saved. It's always a thrill to stand at the side and to realize it's not us, but the Holy Spirit that draws and changes lives. What a privilege to be able to represent Christ!

We love the sights, sounds and tastes of Hawaii!  While we cannot quite reproduce those on the mainland, this scrumptious dessert comes close.

Delicious Coconut Cake

CAKE:

5 egg yolks

2 sticks butter or margarine

1 cup sugar

2 cups flour

1 cup buttermilk

1 tsp soda

2 cups coconut

½ cup pecans

1 tsp vanilla

5 egg whites, whipped

 

FROSTING:

8 oz pkg cream cheese

½ cup butter or margarine

1 lb powdered sugar

1 tsp vanilla

 

Cream egg yolks, butter and sugar.  Add all other ingredients, except whipped egg whites.  After batter is smooth, fold in egg whites with a spoon.  Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.

Mix frosting ingredients together until they are of spreading consistency.  Frost cooled cake and sprinkle with coconut.

Happy Valentine's Day!! We pray you have a day full of love and amazing memories!

 

We are getting better day by day. We appreciate your prayers. We may not hit the pace we would like, but we look forward to continuing to do what we love to do!

 

We are expecting great things as we fulfill our upcoming schedule in Hawaii! Here is our love story and some encouragement for you today:

 

Heart-shaped boxes of chocolate wrapped in shiny red foil, dancing hearts suspended from ceilings, a full assortment of Valentines: plain, lacy, funny, sentimental, heartwarming and more (expensive, may I add?) all grab our attention as if to announce "LOVE IS IN THE AIR!"

 

When I saw this in Walgreen's drug store recently, I couldn't help but reminisce back to my former life as a single girl looking for God's mate for my life. I must share with you that I dated some great guys, but I knew God had one—and only the right one—to be my life's mate. I took that very seriously because I knew without a doubt I was called into full time ministry. That made dating and searching extremely stressful and needless to say, a very intentional journey; a journey that I knew had to ultimately direct me to the one God would pair me with. Every day since I was 8 years old, I had prayed for God to bring that mate to me. I was now 20 years old and back then, that was getting old to get married! How crazy is that!

 

Along my journey, I dated guys from all over and how unique it was that God brought me back to my hometown, home church, and to my teen rival in our church youth group. Through a series of events, starting with Larry's brother, Lowell, walking up to my car after church (as they were home off a five month tour) leaned into my car window and pointedly said, "Hey, Gloria. Why don't you date my brother, Larry?" Being rivals of the past, I just laughed it off at the time. That was until a couple weeks later, Larry asked to take me home from church. I conceded but had absolutely no idea that anything would ever amount to anything between us. I really thought that this may be a time that we could mend our teen rivalry and now that we were adults, we could be friends. Well, it was the beginning of God's plan for our lives which involved months and miles of events, stories, letters, phone calls and casual dates when Larry would be home off tour. Something began to draw us together, and we both knew it was truly God's call on our lives. I didn't know until we started to grow closer through dating, that he, too, was very serious about finding the right one… God's one and only lifetime mate.

 

Let me move on—after dating for a year, I just knew it was all coming together, but Larry closely guarded his feelings to the point that he never even said, "I really like you," or anything similar. I began thinking, I can't just sit here and wait if he does not have intentions in the future for us, I will just move on. Then one spring evening, we were at his parent's farmhouse sitting on the couch, and I, being the strong bold Norwegian that I am, needed to know NOW if this relationship was going to be a STOP or a GO. I took a deep breathe, mustered up courage and said, "Hey, Larry. You know we have been dating for over a year, but I don't know what future intentions you have for us, if any, as you have never even said the words, 'I like you'!" He appeared to be a bit shocked but I continued on, "Do you like me?" And now to my shock, with a straight face, he firmly answered, "I don't like you." At that moment, my heart sunk. But then, he reached over, taking my hand and expressed, "I don't like you; I love you." We both chuckled and laughed and that has been the joke between us for years. That statement was his commitment.

 

I liken that part of our love story to our relationship with God. He is there on the sideline wanting a relationship with us, but God is waiting for the moment we move from "I like you…I guess" to "I love you and want this relationship forever." "And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." Mark 12:30-31.

 

I am so glad Larry and I told God that we loved Him and that we love each other. At this moment, we are so thankful for 52 ½ years of marriage and the soul-winning journey we continue to navigate. Well, that's my story… and I am sticking with it!

Triple Chocolate Cake

1 pkg. devil's food cake mix

1 (4 ½ oz.) pkg. chocolate instant pudding & pie filling

1 (6 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 ¼ c. water

¼ c. vegetable oil

2 eggs

 

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients until moistened. Stir batter vigorously for 1 minute. Spread batter in lightly greased 13x9 pan. Bake until top springs back when touched lightly in center, 40-45 minutes, then cool.
